Spelling of father's name - in Latin note added later to birth record
Joseph Frey was born, in Geiersnest bei St. Ulrich, illegitimate, to Katharina Frey, vagabunda, father unknown. The note in the bottom right corner was read by a German internet forum as:
"“NB. Post aliquot tempus pro
vero patre declaratus, et
in judicio convictus est Joh. Krusy
ex Ebringen, ideoque militiae addictus est.
The English translation is:
"After some time, Joh. Krusy from Ebringen was declared the true father in court and therefore sentenced to military service."
I believe the father was born Joannes Bapt. Geraldus Kraus in Ebringen on 27 June 1765 and died in 1796 at the Siege of Hinigen.
I would like to know if the surname written in this record could be Krusius instead of Krusy. We have been reading it as Krusy because Joseph was recorded as Joseph Grußy when he married in 1821.
If it is actually Krusius, would that indicate anything about his status?

@SusanSchuler We are so glad you have joined our German community - It is a great place to get help and to help others! We have a lot of talented, experienced participants here.
Be sure to review the links at the top of our community page for some great resources - we add new ones as we find them.
We look forward to hearing from you. Most of the time, it is best to "ask a question" - do this by selecting the arrow to the right of "new discussion". Asking a question allows you to accept the answer or let us know you would like more help. I was able to change this post to a question for you.
I will mark this as a rejected answer as it does not answer your question, it just offers some tips. Thus your post will still show unanswered.
Thanks for being patient as we sometimes must wait for a response to come from a volunteer with the needed skill set. It is always good if you include the identification number of the person in question in Family Search Family Tree so we can see the bigger picture.
We look forward to your comments and questions.
Enjoy today! Cindy Jarvis

Thank you Cindy, for the suggestions. The clip came directly from the Archives at Freiburg rather than through Family Search. I tried to find it in Family Search and have not been able to locate it there.
In addition to the opinion on the spelling of father's name, I am looking for insight into why the priest would have Latinized the surname Kraus into either Krusy or Krusius.
Previously, I have only seen given and middle names Latinized for regular people. Surname Latinization seems to occur for people with a religious or scholarly career.
I have discovered that Crusius is the Latinized version of Kraus. For example, Martin Crusius, born Kraus, who became a noted professor of Latin and Greek at the University at Tuebingen. Birth records for his children and for records where he is a witness mostly use the surname Crusius, but occasionally Krusius, Crusi, Krusi, or Krusy.
Another theory is that Krusy is a "nickname" or "pet name" for Kraus, but I doubt that would be used in a legal document.
Any thoughts are welcome.

@SusanSchuler lets try moving this to the top of the list of posts one more time and see if we can find a volunteer with the needed skill set to help you out. Sometimes we just have to wait patiently.
Best wishes in your quest to discover more about those that came before you! Cindy
