Reserved names vs Shared with temple names

I have printed names cards that expire in Oct 2021. These names have also been shared with the temple by another person.

  1. Can I do the temple work before Oct 2021?
  2. Am I able to print name cards under 'Ordinances Ready' that have previously been shared with the temple by others?
  3. If I do the temple work do the names come off the the shared with temple list?

to answer your questions. If you have reserved a name that was shared with the temple that reservation is only available for 90 days - I suspect that is the situation with your Oct 2021 expiring reservations. Any name shared with the temple can be reserved by others -- however, they should following the policies regarding only reserving names who they are related to. When the temple work is completed for these name they will no longer appear as needing ordinances and any reservations will disappear - so they will not show as shared with the temple and they will no show in the original reserver's list. Ordinance ready will pick names from the shared with the temple but will only reserve for 90 days if the ordinances are in that category.

    1.   Yes, if you have printed name cards that expire in October 2021, you can go ahead and do the temple work. Since the cards have also been shared with the temple, it would be wise to check the ordinance page of the individual’s record to make sure that the temple has not yet printed the card. If printed, the ordinance would already be in the temple system and you should not do the ordinance. If the ordinance still shows that it is shared with the temple, go ahead and request it so that no one else does the ordinance before you get to the temple.

Here is additional information to avoid duplication from the article, “How do I share a family name with the temple?” https://www.familysearch.org/help/helpcenter/article/how-do-i-share-a-family-name-with-the-temple

    Avoiding duplication

If you have already printed the name card, you can still share the ordinances with the temple. Please be careful, though, that the ordinances aren't performed more than once. Taking these precautions can help:

    ·       If you shared all of the person's ordinances, please destroy the name card.

    ·       If you shared some of the ordinances and want to keep the card so that you can perform the others, please write xxx or another note in the boxes of the ordinances that you shared.

    ·       Ordinances should be performed in the correct order: baptism, confirmation, initiatory, and endowment. If you shared an ancestor's baptism and confirmation, you will need to wait until they are completed before you can continue with the initiatory and endowment.

    2.     Yes, you are able to print name cards under “Ordinance Ready” that have previously been shared with the temple. But understand that the idea of Ordinance Ready is that you plan to complete the ordinances at the temple soon. Once you have printed the ordinances from Ordinance Ready, you have 90 days to complete them. Here is a note from the article, “How long do you have to complete ordinances before reservations expire?” that explains the time limit: https://www.familysearch.org/help/helpcenter/article/how-long-do-you-have-to-complete-ordinances-before-reservations-expire

Note: When a person shares an ancestor's ordinances with the temple, those ordinances are available for other descendants to reserve. This second reservation expires in 90 days and cannot be shared. It can only be unreserved. After 90 days, the ordinance is returned to the temple, and the person who originally shared the ordinance has the option to unshare it.

    3.     Yes, if you complete the temple ordinances, the dates of the completed ordinances are listed on the Ordinance page of that individual. At that point they are completed and no longer shared with the temple.
