Issue for Family History Center Printing and Network Connectivity
On July 1, 2021, a vulnerability in all versions of Windows printing functionality was found. This vulnerability (dubbed “PrintNightmare”) allows attackers to gain complete system control. On July 6, Microsoft released patches for all versions of Windows. But this patch will not work on systems older than Windows 10 without additional licensing costs. The Family History Department is in the process of upgrading older systems to Windows 10, but there are still some upgrades that need to take place.
As of July 26, 2021, all Family History Center computers running a Windows operating system older than Windows 10 (including Windows XP or Windows 7) will be unable to print. To enable printing, please upgrade the operating system to Windows 10 by following the instructions in the article Whether to update family history center computers to Windows 10.
Because of this vulnerability, April 30, 2022, has been selected as the last date church networks will allow unsupported Windows operating systems on the network. This includes Windows 7, XP, and Vista. These systems will be unable to connect after this date.

Does this apply to patrons' devices as well? I have people who are having issues with connecting to Liahona when they bring in their laptops or trying to access the wifi with their phones. Is there a work around for them or should I add a warning on our wikisearch page about personal devices and connectivity?

This applies only to FHC devices. Liahona network is NOT part of the Family History Center Technical support but is under the local Technology Specialist.

If they're having trouble have them remove the Liahona wifi from their list and then re-connect. Remind them also that there is an acknowledgement page required whenever you connect to Liahona - and not all devices are good at automatically displaying the acknowledgement page so they may have to open a browser to get that page. But since this is a printer discussion the FHC printers should not be attached to Liahona network anyway and unless FHC says differently I don't think patrons are supposed to be printing from personal devices - please correct me if I'm wrong about that.

So in my FHC, we have all Windows 10 computers but I cannot even find the printer on the system. How would I resolve that?

I would suggest you contact FHC Support at 866-406-1830 and have someone walk you through the steps of setting up the center printer

Even now (early February 2023), we just had all our computers stop accessing the printer the other day. It was a matter of the 10.xxx IP address that previously still worked despite the change to the 192.xxx addressing for the computers. Suddenly even that did not work the other day, and the work around was to log in as administrator, delete the Center printer (even though it "looks" correct - note the 10.xxx IP address however), and then "Add" a new printer. The same printer should show up in the list of available printers - just select it and you should then be good on any/all of your printers. But you'll have to delete and then re-add the printer so it's on the 192.xxx IP addressing in order for it to work. If updates were supposed to take care of that for us, they did not work even though we were completely up to date the other day when we discovered it. Simple solution, just a bit time consuming depending on how many computers you've got.

All centers will need to remove and re-install the Lexmark computers AFTER the move of the printer to the 192 addresses. When you search and pick from the list, you select Multifunction, not any others.

the administrator log in isn't showing up as an option on any of our 4 computers at our FSC
we only have "patron", "ChurchSupport", "fchqsupport", "image"
another of our FSC's has the "Administrator" , "FSAdmin", "Patron" ,"fchqsupport", "image"
why is this and how can I log in as administrator to make network sharing changes at ours?

There are a few reasons the Administrator Account does not show on all your computers. Some builds of windows 10 do not have an administrator account, some hide the administrator account, and some have migrated to the new FSAdmin Account.
In any case to resolve this, you need to call FSC Support (1-866-406-1830 option 5) and either repair the account if possible or reimage the computer to an image that has the account.
