    Okay, so one final one! There has been another "Vmitt" indexed from English parish records:

    @RobertWakefield

    This record appears to have already been indexed - see https://www.familysearch.org/search/record/results?q.givenName=william&q.givenName.exact=on&q.birthLikePlace=england&q.birthLikePlace.exact=on&q.birthLikeDate.from=1655&q.birthLikeDate.to=1655&q.fatherGivenName=edward&q.fatherGivenName.exact=on&q.motherGivenName=martha&q.motherGivenName.exact=on&count=20&offset=0&m.defaultFacets=on&m.queryRequireDefault=on&m.facetNestCollectionInCategory=on and the screenshot below.

    I was already going to suggest a first letter of "V", based on an entry of the opposite page, showing an occupation (for Gabriel Middleton) as "Victaler" (sic).

    There appear to be no similar names indexed in FamilySearch and I could not find this as a surname in a Google search. Sometimes a cross-bar appears across a double-l in old parish registers, but Vmill makes no more sense that Vmitt.

    Obviously, a simple explanation could be that the name was recorded as it had been heard, but - even using wildcards in FamilySearch (E.g. "V*mit*) doesn't produce anything close. I am fairly convinced of that first letter being a "V", however.

    I wonder if this second screenshot offers clues? I carried out a search just using "Stepney" and parents Edward & Martha for the period 1645-1665 and these further "similar" names were produced.

    (See https://www.familysearch.org/search/record/results?q.birthLikePlace=stepney*&q.birthLikePlace.exact=on&q.birthLikeDate.from=1645&q.birthLikeDate.to=1665&q.fatherGivenName=edward&q.fatherGivenName.exact=on&q.motherGivenName=martha&q.motherGivenName.exact=on&count=20&offset=0&m.defaultFacets=on&m.queryRequireDefault=on&m.facetNestCollectionInCategory=on)

    Thanks for that. Vmitt it is then, unless it gets changed in Review.
