Joseph M Snyder (1828-1912) KJH3-S3S
I'm trying to find the parents of Joseph M Snyder. He married what might have been a cousin (?) Charity J. Snyder in Calhoun Co., Michigan 16 Oct 1853. They had two children. He mustered in the Army for the Civil War in 1861 (at 31yrs old) in Union, Branch County, Michigan. Pension file files indicates he was injured in the war. He returned home briefly, but left his family. He married Merena Meyers, the widow of Silas Bowker, in Du Page County, Illinois 05 Jun 1867. They had 3 more children. Both wives applied for pension, but Charity was denied as he was married to Merena.
Later in life he lived in the old Soldiers home in Milwaukee. The records from there had a clue that he was born in Conquest, Cayuga County, New York. Not having any luck finding his parents though.

Here are some facts to consider:
1- Marriage record in 1853 states that both Joseph and Charity are from Clarence, in Calhoun county.
2- Census in 1850 and tax records for 1853 show only two Snyder families in Clarence--George (Charity's father) and John B.
3- Witnesses at Joseph and Charity's marriage were Alva and Eunice Bemis also of Clarence. They may or may not be related.
4- Military records often give places of birth. Have you been able to read the actual pension file and/or enlistment register?
5- Conquest, New York was founded by George Snyder, which I'm sure you know. What can you find about his ancestors and their descendants?
