This post cannot be correct….my ancestor WAS BORN IN THE USA, but listed as an immigrant?

Im still waiting for the image you uploaded to be "released" for me to see it
but any genealogist of any significant time of research - can point you at numerous examples of documents where an supposedly official document - had at times, some numerous or obvious errors.
My own great grandfather's death certificate - had his father born in Germany and his mother born in France
this was an interesting find - because his children surely would have known both parents were born in the USA
I wondered if it was some "practical joke"

Welcome to this "Community.FamilySearch" Forum.
I am just a 'lowly' User/Patron ...
[ And, I happen to be a Member of the Church ... ]
'Yes' ... I 'see' ...
That "Campaign", by 'FamilySearch', of "Saint by Sea", is somewhat misleading, in the case of your Ancestor.
As you can clearly 'see' on that "Image" (and, against his record, in "Family Tree" of 'FamilySearch'), your Ancestor was, in fact, BORN in in the United Sates of America, there is NOT doubt about that.
ie. BORN: 1 August 1838, Shady Grove, Daviess, Missouri, United States
But ...
That Said ...
Your Ancestor DID actually travel on a "Voyage to America"; BUT, as a RETURN Missionary ...
Your Ancestors served a Mission OVERSEAS ...
And, of course, your Ancestor was one of the "Early Utah Mormon Pioneers".
As an aside ...
Please DO NOT concern yourself with this "Campaign" ... with regard to "Samuel Harrison Bailey SMITH"
The "Campaigns" are simply to engage Users/Patrons in participating in "Family Tree" of 'FamilySearch'.
We all get them, I get them; and, I am a regular (Daily) participant in "Family Tree" of 'FamilySearch'.
By the way ...
At least they got his "Voyage" right, that is something ...
I hope this helps.
Brett
ps: G'Day Cuz ▬ from "Downunder" (Australia).
pps: 'Lo and Behold' ... I just checked that "View My Relationship" on "Samuel Harrison Bailey SMITH" ( KWCD-FYM ), he is "MY 12TH COUSIN TWICE REMOVED" ▬ such a SMALL World; but, even SMALLER in the Church.

and yes - as Brett points out - - most of these "immigration" databases don't differentiate between
soldiers and missionaries traveling and returning from over seas and true immigrants
one should never assume immigration database query returns - imply a non citizen coming into the country
or an indication of a foreign citizenship.
one should always look at the original document to see what sort of indicators it has
but also realize even then - there are often many errors and mis-perceptions of the records.

and that screen shot doesn't obviously show everything - but I dont see where it uses the word "immigrant"
but it does refer to a "voyage to America"

Brett,
Your pps >> 'Lo and Behold' ... I just checked that "View My Relationship" on "Samuel Harrison Bailey SMITH" ( KWCD-FYM ), he is "MY 12TH COUSIN TWICE REMOVED" ▬ such a SMALL World; but, even SMALLER in the Church.
Intrigued I checked to see how my family might be connected, to be honest I really didn't expect anything, however, to my surprise, he was married to my 10th cousin twice removed. As you say it's a small world and in the Church a very small world.
Best regards to all.

you'd be surprised. . . going back 12 generations we have thousands of ancestors
if a person we are comparing to - is for the same more or less region (such as England etc)
chances are actually pretty good that at some point we are related to them - and once you go back like 12 generations - - the chances can be reasonably good to find a match.
many people are related to their next door neighbor or co-worker - and dont even know it.

Dennis,
That is very true, I found out I am related to the husband of a wonderful friend who I have know since forever. I bet I'm related to her as well as we are from the same neck of the woods.
Apparently if we go back to Britain of 600-800 years ago ( can't remember which) ANYONE of British decent alive then who has decedents is our ancestor. Simply because it's a numbers game. It's a bit mind boggling, but fun.

G'day Cuz
Just a couple of Years ago now, we sent some 2½ Years travelling around the World.
You would not believe the number of People, ALL over the World, that we found we were related to.
Some we knew about, through, "Family Tree" of 'FamilySearch'; and, "Ancestry_com".
Whereas, some were random strangers, we met while travelling; and, then, (sometimes much later) found out they we were actually related.
Over the many Years of doing Genealogy/Family History it has proven to me that, 'Yes' ... We are ALL Related.
And, in doing one's Genealogy/Family History HE will help ... brick walls, will come crumbling down.
Perfection, although desirable, is NOT required ... HE only want to see one making the effort (ie. a true effort).
One will NOT find one's Ancestors (and, their "Living" Descendants) UNLESS one DOES the Work.
MANY of our Ancestors WANT to be found.
[ Granted, some do not. ]
It really is a matter of just looking.
And, asking for Help/Assistance, along the way, when needed.
I make no secret that I am a Member of the Church ...
But, being a 'Convert' from 'Downunder', it was such a surprise to find out that I was related to Joseph SMITH.
Well, I really suppose, it should not have been, considering my "Scottish" Ancestry.
And, my Wife and I, have found that we are actually connected to quite a few of the same Ancestors.
We are BOTH related to "Brigham YOUNG".
I'm related to a few of the (Church) Prophets (x16); whereas, she's related to many of the Wives of Prophets.
'Yes', as I said, (it is really) such a SMALL World; but, even SMALLER in the Church.

Hi Cousin Brett,
Good to hear from you. When Roots Tec had the 'Relation Tracker' I couldn't believe the amount of cousins I have in America, with a more scattered around the world, some down in Australia and New Zealand and in Europe as well and that is only the ones who were on Roots Tech. Many of the American cousins are descended from just a few people, which figures I suppose.
I have used the Relative Finder programme as well and it's fun to see who I'm related to the wonderful and the ah well!
I'm new as a Service Missionary and still have loads to learn. I do find your answer are very good and I can learn from them so thank you. I just have to remember to bookmark them. I must admit I do get frustrated when I see an answer and I only have a vague idea about how to answer it, but still it gives this brain a work out and stops it from festering.
Best wishes and God bless

Hey Cuz
"RootTech 2021" was amazing; especially, being able to find that you were "Related", to SO Many Users/Patrons, from ALL around the World.
And, especially be able to "Contact" them - I just wished that 'Window' stayed OPEN for MUCH longer.
I was able to get a number of Users/Patrons, from my 'neck of the woods', SO excited to 'see' that were "Related" to so many; and, to be able to "Contact" them. Some are STILL 'conversing' with new found Extended Family (as am I).
What I found, both, interesting; and, somewhat, funny, was how many, Administrators; Managers; and, Groups Leaders, from this "Community.FamilySearch" Forum (and, Product Managers from 'FamilySearch') that I have worked with in this Forum for a couple of years, that I was actually "Related" to. They were just as surprised as I was. There we were, working in the same Forum, not knowing that we were "Related".
I, avidly promote; and, am a proponent of, (BYU) "RelativeFinder", in this Forum.
I have requested (last year) the 'creation', of a NEW 'Group', in "Groups" Section, for (BYU) "RelativeFinder".
Unfortunately, due to a change of "Administrators" in the Forum, late last year; and, the change to a NEW Platform for the Forum, a few Months ago, this year, the creation of NEW 'Groups', was; and, has been, put on hold; so, I have not yet seen my request come to fruition.
But, that said, we can live in hope.
I have used (BYU) "RelativeFinder" to help/assist Users/Patrons find some amazing things about their Ancestry, many have been emotionally overjoyed. Especially, from my 'neck of the woods', when (Convert) Members of the Church, find out, that they are related to, Early Utah Mormon Pioneers; or, Church Leaders; or, Church Members of some note; but, especially, those from the "Willie" and "Martin" 'Handcart' Companies.
I cannot wait till (well, hope) that 'Group' for (BYU) "RelativeFinder" gets created.
Believe me, there is a lot to learn - all I do is learn, something new, every day; and, I have been doing this for some time now.
'Thank You', you make me 'blush' ... I am not a 'up front, stage' person, more a 'behind the scenes' person.
But, I am nowhere, as good, as some, of the regular participant in this Forum; and, especially, those that have joined from the OLD 'FamilySearch' ("GetSatisfaction") 'Feedback' Forum, the forerunner to this Forum.
Give it time - you will get there.
As to giving the 'brain a workout' ...
I maintain, that doing Genealogy/Family History Work, is one of the 'best medicines', for staving off, the onset of the likes of Alzheimer's and some other forms of dementia, certainly gives the brain necessary exercise, much better that just a "Book". Of course, coupled with physical exercise; and, some fun.
Good Luck; as, a 'FamilySearch' "Support" Missionary.
We will most probably 'cross paths' again in this Forum; or, even, through, our 'Common' Ancestry.
All the best.
Kind Regards.
MAY THE LORD BLESS YOU IN THIS IMPORTANT WORK.
Cousin Brett
