Since images 2 and 3 have overlays we read that we are not to index any information underneath the overlays and only the information that is needed for naturalization records, we will not use the record number of 71 for those records. Image 3 will not be indexed since it does not have any information required. Also, image 1 does not have record number 71 on that particular page of the document but is on another page. We will not use record number 71 for image 1. Image 4 is the only one where the record number 71 will be recorded. You are correct about the names. Images 2 and 4 are about Louis Hessinger and image 1 is about John Joseph Kelly. The Field Helps and the examples given in the Project instructions will help you with that information. I hope this has answered your question.

So let me get this straight, image 2 has the following information on it: name, event date and event place. You decide that needs to be indexed.
Doesn't image 3 have the name, record number and event date? Image 2 also has the name, no record number and event date. Why image 2 gets indexed and not 3 if they contain the same amount of information?

Thank you for that question. Image 2 has information in the "St Louis Court of Appeals" that relates to the naturalization process. This is the only information you will index for that image. Image 3 is the backside of the overlay in image 2. It does not have any information that is required. It will be marked as No Extractable Data. Does that help you?

Actually I don't know. Image 2 has an event date of October 4, 1902. Image 3 has an event date of Jan 10, 1908. Back to my original question the documentation states "index the number that increases consecutively across the separate documents" Clearly image 1 is record 70 and images 2-4 are record 71.

As I said earlier, anything under the overlays in images 2 and 3 are not to be indexed. Please review the information in the Project Instructions under General Indexing Guidelines - Overlays. Ignore the information under the overlay. The overlay in image 2 will be indexed. Image 3 will not be indexed it will be marked as No Extractable Data since the overlay on image 3 does not have any information that needs to be indexed. Index image 4 with the record number 71 since it is clearly stated there. Image 1 does not have a record number. The number on the right hand side of that page pertains to another document.
Also, the Field Help for Record number states: Type the record or certificate number. It was often indicated near the beginning of the document or next to the record and was indicated by the abbreviated term "no," but the location varies according to the type of document. The record or certificate number was often recorded in a red font.

Sir, The event date has nothing to do with the record number. Image 1 does not have a record number so we will mark that record number as <blank>. The event date for image 1 is January 14, 1908. Image 2 the event date is indeed October 4, 1902. It does not have any record number. Mark the record number for image 2 as <blank>. Image 3 is Not to be indexed. It will be marked No Extractable data. Image 4 has the event date as January 16, 1908. Image 4 the record number that is shown on the top left hand and right hand that shows 71. Use this as the record number for image 4. This is in accordance with the Field help instructions, the Project instructions and the General Indexing guidelines. Please follow these instructions.
