Possibility of a new image file with all the updates?
When visiting one of the 4 FHC's I support I noticed that it seems all 11 computers in the main location seemed to have a different configuration for default users and various other changes. I personally re-imaged all of these computers about 5 months ago and they were all identical then. In speaking with a tech it seems that in the upcoming changes that various updates have been sent out, but there is no consistency as to what machines update and which don't.
I'm wondering if when the new portals are done and we're ready to update everything if we can just get a new image and start fresh with everything. Hopefully that image will be made with all the latest windows updates since last time I had to spend an average of an hour plus trying to get all the updates done after re-imaging the machines.
Thoughts?

Updates to computers need to be done manually, I would suggest every 2 weeks to manually update each computer. Also select the online update also. I hope this answers your question

Could you clarify the difference between manual updates and online updates? It was my understanding that shutting down and restarting each machine would update them.

Some things are automatically updated, and some have to be done manually. When you go to your settings, update and securities, will show if you need to update the computer. There is written in blue, check online for updates. That has to be selected also. If there are any optional update you can install them also.

Thursday night, September 2,at 7pm Eastern, Pacific and Hawaiian time zones. is the Tech Talk zoom meeting please try to attend. You can get a lot of questions answered then.
If you go to groups, in small search box type Tech, this will bring up the Family History Center Tech Support group. Click on that, on their page look at top right of page for a sign in box, if there click sign in, then look for a join button.
The zoom meeting will be listed under upcoming events , it will be listed for your time zone. Also may I suggest you click on articles and tools spreadsheet, then look at the zoom power point slides. These will give you an idea of things that have been discussed in past meetings
Looking forward to seeing you Thursday night, September 2.

I believe the biggest problem is not from the updates that the Church sends out but the fact that public access to computers allows the users to make certain changes. They can move items around on the desktop, sometimes install software, change the default browser and so on. Previously we had access to DeepFreeze which was a wonderful way to lock things down and prevent unauthorized changes. It was an optional program that was available from the Church.
If you are not familiar with that kind of software, it has the computer operate in a "sandbox" and no matter what changes a user makes when it in a frozen state, a reboot restores the previous configuration. The techs who maintain the computers can un-freeze them, perform any updates, install new software, etc, and then re-freeze for patron use. All saved items go on the patron's flash or portable hard drive and not to the center computer. We had ZERO problems of users screwing things up until the more recent computers we received, which do not have DeepFreeze (and the software and configuration scripts no longer seem to be available through the Church). I do wish that would be made available again.

In the past Microsoft updates were automatic, That has changed in the past year. Each comnputer needs to be manually updated now. Deep Freeze should n ot be installed on Family History Computers. There is now a Tool Box option that can be installed on all FHC computers and will also erase items upon shutdown. You can go to the Tech Support Community for information on the Tool Box than you can call 1-866-406-1830 and a Tech can install it for you.
