The following Help Center article gives the steps for you to follow. You will need to talk to your Bishop about this issue.
When should I obtain permission before performing ordinances for the deceased?
In certain situations, you must obtain permission before performing a temple ordinance for someone who has died. These include:
- Performing an ordinance for someone who died in the last 110 years when you are not a close relative.
- Performing an ordinance for someone who had his or her Church membership withdrawn during his or her lifetime.
- Performing a sealing that involves a nonbiological parent.
For more information on these topics, please consult the Church’s General Handbook: Serving in The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, Section 28 and Section 38.4. You could also talk with your bishop or a ward temple and family history consultant.

We will send your request to a department who can review it. You will get a private message requesting the following information:
- Contact information of the patron (please verify that all information is correct and current in the case).
- Name, birth date, death date, and death place of the individual for whom the patron wants information.
- Relationship of the patron to that individual.
To view your messages please go to the envelope next to your name on the upper right side of the Community Website.
