Please add a pop-up for New Messages upon login

Please consider adding a pop-up for "You have New Messages" upon login. There are so many contributors who never respond to messages. In trying to understand why, it seems many inexperienced users do not even know there is a Message icon, much less a red dot to indicate they have messages.

If a pop-up is implemented, please include a way to turn it off. That red dot on every page is already intrusive enough.
