Whether to reserve and share temple ordinances
I have a large extended family. Some of them are willing to do the ordinance work for the names I find. (I'm doing descendant research and finding a large number of distant cousins.) But I can find many more names than we are actually able to get done in a reasonable amount of time. My options are 1) reserve them all and nag like crazy hoping family members will go to the temple more often and take these names. 2) Reserve only the ones I think I can do myself and leave the rest as green temples for someone else to find, or 3) reserve them all and share any surplus with the temple. What is the best thing to do?

Individual & family circumstances vary, so there isn’t a one size fits all answer.
At this point in my life, I enjoy researching & adding names to Family Tree, but not reserving ordinances. My list consists of a few names that I feel a special connection with.
Some users prefer to reserve many names & share with family members or the temple.

In part, this article says “Try to not reserve more family names than can be completed in a reasonable time, approximately two years or less. This number includes family names reserved and shared with the temple.”
See the link for more information.

for any large number of names - I very much prefer sharing them with the temple
Now that being said - it may take a couple years for the ball to start rolling (because of so much in queue)
but in the grand scheme of things - this method is MUCH MUCH better than the stress and hectic process of nagging family - and tryign to keep track etc.
I have submitted thousands of names to the temple file - - it all gets done eventually - and I dont have to worry about all the nagging and keeping track.
whats a year or two for things to start getting processed - when people have been waiting over a hundred years and in my mind such process is much more reliable - then me trying to coordinate, nag and keep track.

Also, sharing with the temple file will allow those same relatives you are nagging ... to run Ordinances Ready and get these same names - yet you don't have to nag them and you don't have to be the temple cop monitoring when they get them done. You just share and other people who are related to them will get the work done.

also - if people do really want the names I have in queue - - I wait till the exact week that I know for sure they are going to the temple and ONLY then - do I convert temples names to non temple names and generate the cards (in pdf) and then email them the pdf so they can do - and just enough for that one temple visit .

I appreciate everyone's comments and I realize that we all do things a little bit differently. I have no problem with sharing names to the temple. I also realize that not everyone has family groups. I too have spent countless hours nagging my siblings, which is why I set up my family group. Perhaps the best way for FamilySearch to do this is, that if a name is reserved for the temple and then gets reserved, that it should be removed from Temple Shared. That way it could be shared with a Family Group. FamilySearch should also fix the problem where names shared with Family Groups can be printed multiple times or that the ordinance to be done can be selected and printed. Now that temples are no longer handing back cards, the process of reprinting cards for each ordinance has become a real pain in the "Wazooo"! They should also allow multiple names on one sheet of paper when reprinting. I wish they'd go back to returning cards at the temple, at least those cards that still have ordinances left to do on them. If there are no more ordinances to do, then toss the name.

Just want to point out the the help center article is out of date. In reference to not having long shared with temple lists because they won't load properly, they fixed that by having separate pages of only fifty names per page rather than having it as one long list. It is perfectly fine to share everyone with the temple and then let family, not just the ones in a family group but the entire family, find them through Ordinances Ready.

FYI
I am just another 'lowly' User/Patron ...
[ And, I happen to be a Member of the Church ... ]
Just in passing ...
Firstly ...
Please be, aware; and, advised, that ...
IF, Work is "Share[d] with the Temple System"; and, that Work IS "Reserved", by a User/Patron; THEN, ...
(1) Firstly, that "Reservation", by the User/Patron, is ONLY "Temporary", for just a period of x90 Days; and,
(2) Secondly, when that x90 Day "Period" has expired; and, NO, "temple" Work undertaken ...
.... the "Reservation" AUTOMATICALLY reverts back to the "Temple System".
(3) Finally, "Technically", the "Reservation" is NEVER "Released", from the "Temple System" ...
.... Even, when such is "Reserved", by a User/Patron ...
.... Such is REALLY, just 'Out on Loan' ... 'so to speak' ...
Secondly ...
Like MANY, I, believe; and, suggest, that Work, that has been "Share[d] with the Temple System", SHOULD be allowed/able, to be "Shared", with a "Family Group", in fact MULTIPLE "Family Groups".
They COULD work, in tandem; and, we would actually have, the BEST of BOTH worlds.
[ ie. The "Temple System"; and, a "Family Group" (or, "Family Groups") ... ]
IF, such was the case; THEN, I would humbly venture to suggest, that It is more likely, that the Work WOULD actually get done FASTER ...
Hey; but, that is just me ...
Finally ...
I agree ...
Like, MANY; Many, many, I REALLY wish, that the ALL "Temples", would RETURN, the "Temple" Cards, upon request, AFTER each "Ordinance", has been "Completed", to facilitate ALL the Work, being done on the SAME card, in the SAME"Temple", on the SAME Day; as, such IS "Authorised"/"Approved", by the Church.
Do temples still return family name cards?
https://www.familysearch.org/en/help/helpcenter/article/do-temples-still-return-family-name-cards
Where, it states, among other things:
Quote
------------------
Can I perform more than 1 ordinance for an ancestor during the same visit?
Yes. To perform multiple ordinances for an ancestor during a single visit, select the ordinances you will complete, and print the name card. Once at the temple, notify temple workers of your intention and ask that they return the card to you for the next ordinance. They will collect the card at the conclusion of your visit.
------------------
It is unfortunate, to 'hear', that SOME "Temple" are NOT following, what HAS been "Authorised"/"Approved", by the Church.
And ...
Oh, and, personally, like MANY, I REALLY wish, that the "Temples", would be ALLOWED, to RETURN, the "Temple" Cards, upon request, AFTER "All" of the "Ordinance" have been "Completed" - as a personal 'Keepsake'.
We can but live in hope.
Just my thoughts.
