My ancestral relationship
Several months ago, I received information from family search that I was related to the First Earl of Selkirk, birth date, 1634, from Scotland
It was further stated that I was related to several church members.
when I returned to family search a few days later for details, I was told that I was not related to the First Earl of Selkirk or that he was more than 15 generations away from me. Which is it?

It appears that the connection to those individuals has been removed from your family. This is usually done when someone finds an incorrect parent child or spouse relationship and removes or deletes that relationship. That would remove the relationship to their ancestors as well. To discover which relationship was removed you can look at the Latest Changes for the individuals who were removed or were removed from your line, but you would need to know where in your line the disconnect took place. If you do not have a record of the relationships you saw several months ago, you will not know where to look. If you find that the relationship was removed incorrectly you can restore it from the Latest Changes.

It has been a while since you asked your question. Have you been able to figure out which family line led to First Earl of Selkirk, in Scotland? Do you remember the shared ancestor shown in the View My Relationship chart? If you do, that may be the place to start looking for the relationship change.
You may be able to get some personal help from a nearby Family History Center or Affiliate Library. Most are beginning to open up again.
