Virginia Slave/White Birth Records
In the list of children born, there are columns that list father names and if they are owner or father. Sometimes it will say Owner, then the next three or or four entries that follow will have a Do under it even if the reporting adult name changes. Does that Do mean that they are all owners? Then if the category changes, it will say father, then owner, then father, then the Do could be listed again. Does that Do mean in this circumstance that the next name was a father also?
In the indexing samples, they did not use the Do column as an example, so I'm at a loss of how to treat those columns that have Do in them.
Hi Jami. You didn’t share your batch (click on 3rd horizontal icon from the right to see how) so I can’t look at it to be sure, but ‘Do’ is in fact an older abbreviation for Ditto. Here is a Help Center article on Ditto that might support your thinking to repeat the info above the Do (i.e. Ditto).
How do I index ditto marks?
Article Id: 950, Published November 14, 2020 . If a record has a ditto mark or other sign of repetition, type the corresponding information from the previous record or field. Do not index the word "ditto" or the ditto mark itself. Other signs of repetition may include the abbreviation "Do" or a vertical or horizontal line.
Note: Sometimes you will have to depend on contextual information to determine whether a mark indicates repeated information from an earlier record or field, or whether it means something else, such as that no information was given for that record or field.0
