Elizabeth Cary KNJG-KSC
My 3rd great grandmother was born in Kentucky on 14 Jan 1824 which I have from Find a Grave. I don't know what county or town. My next record of her is her marriage in Dearborn, Indiana, in 1840 to a John Morris. Censuses show her living in Lawrenceburg, Dearborn, Indiana. I am looking for her parents, and I don't know where to start. None of the marriage records show her parents. Censuses are pretty non-specific when she was younger. I have that her mother was Hannah. It certainly would help to know in what town she was born. Can anyone suggest where to look?

Hello Drew!
That's a tough one for sure! Kentucky births were not recorded prior to 1852. How did you find out her mother was named Hannah?
Do you have a death certificate or obituary? Is it possible she was adopted?
Sorry for more questions, but we can get this pointed in the right direction.
Looking forward to discovering Elizabeth's parents!

I found her birth date in Find a Grave. Also, she was said to be the daughter of Hannah Cary. She got married to a John Morris in 1840 in Dearborn, Indiana. In the 1880 census they were living in Morristown, Randolph, Indiana. I was hoping that maybe her family was living where she got married in Dearborn, Indiana - but I couldn't find them.

If you know her death date, it's possible to try and find the death certificate. Especially if her death was after Kentucky started keeping records. Do you have that?

She died and was buried:
Death
1904
Parker City, Randolph, Indiana, United States
How do you find death certificates? And do you think it would show her parents?

It’s possible but not always guaranteed. We could do a general search to see a “sample” death certificate issued at that time frame in Indiana and see if it does. Most states do that but I’ve seen a minority that don’t.
Vitalcheck.com is a service for getting death/birth certificates, however there is a fee. It’s possible the death certificate just hasn’t been indexed yet (FamilySearch releases millions of new records per month) but I know it’s so hard to wait.
We could also try a newspapers.com search to see if an obituary was listed in the paper. These can be a geographical area and because you know the death city, it’s likely there would be some info. At that time, they usually gave a detailed family history.

Here's a source of Indiana newspapers which may show something:

Also, (I apologize for all the messages, my brain is going crazy with ideas) is there a way to find out more about her mother? I know she was born in 1780 per her record, however that would have made Hannah 44 years old. NOT impossible, but that might not be the correct Hannah. We could start researching her in Kentucky since that is where Elizabeth was born. Just a thought and possibly one you have already explored! Thank you for letting me work on this!

I have tried that a little, but I could spend more time on it. I have tried looking for Elizabeth inn Newspapers, but I am having a hard time getting around in it. I tried paying for an account, but it looks like I already had one. Do you get a free account with your Ancestry membership?

Thank you. I think I have found a husband for Hannah Cary. Stephen Cary born in New York. I will keep looking for more information to verify it. Right now I am working as a FamilySearch support missionary. I guess we will be coming over to Community shortly.

Hi Drew -
Yes with Newspapers.com....Ancestry gets that information as well. They are "sister companies".
AWESOME on finding a husband. Can't wait to see you filling in that tree.
Thank you for sharing your success!
