Engelke of Reisel Community, McLennan, Texas
I am trying to find the family of my Grandfather, Henry Frederic Engelke, 26 February 1871 – 28 May 1937. I was told he was born in Hanover Germany. He died in Waco, McLennan County. He married Henriette Krueger, they had 4 children. I'm looking specifically for anything about Henry Frederic Engelke. His death certificate says his father's name was Muggs or Mugge Engelke. The story I was told was Henry came as a child of 7 with an uncle, haven't found his immigration records. I am assuming he must have settled in around New Ulm, Texas as that is where the Kruegers are from.

Hi Sueann,
I've searched the immigration and naturalization records but haven't come up with a good match. Did anyone ever mention the name of the uncle he came with?
You have done a great job on your research and I'm not real sure of where to look. If anyone in the Community has more ideas please let us know.
Have you considered joining the German group and posting there?
Thank you for using the FamilySearch Community,
Carol Selander
PS I live in Hewitt TX which is a suburb of Waco.

Hi Carol, though I was born in Austin, I live in Alberta, Canada. Makes researching family interesting. I haven't posted a query on the German site yet, mainly because I'm not really sure of the info on his parents, got it from Ancestry. Dad only ever mentioned an Uncle August, but he could have been connected to either the Engelkes or Kruegers, all I have is a vague memory from when I was a kid. The circumstances around his dad's death meant he never ever mentioned his dad or told stories about him. I didn't find out about the way his dad died until shortly before my mom died, (she told me the story which was confirmed on his death certificate). I never met any of the Krueger's though I did know dad's siblings, we met a couple of times when I was a kid, but we lived in Canada and they lived in Waco so visits weren't frequent.
I truly appreciate you replying to my query.

I went searching through the newspapers to see if an obit might mention anything more but unfortunately very little was written:
"Funeral services for Henry F. Engelke, who died at his home, 1317 Jefferson avenue, at 8:30 p.m. Friday, were held Sunday at 3 p.m. from Wilkirson-Hatch Chapel, Rev. Stanley Olson officiating. Interment in Rosemound cemetery."

Try looking for the Rev Stanley Olson, what church is he associated with? There maybe some church records either on FamilySearch or still in the local area. Try searching in the Books area of FamilySearch. (Under Search, the dropdown menu, Books.) See if there might be any historical books from the county. Since there might have been a German community there look for that as well.
