Sometimes the surname of a parent is listed and sometimes not. Please tell me what I should do about Surname for father and mother in this batch that I am reviewing.

Thanks for sharing your batch. It looks like the father's surname is not listed and the mother's surname is listed. In this case, you would index the child's surname, mark the father's surname as <blank> using the Ctrl or Cmd + B code, and index the mother's given and surname.

The field helps for the surnames of the Parent's say: If only 1 surname was recorded for both parents, type it in the Surname field for both parents. Do not type the child's surname in this field.

The indexer should not have entered a surname for the father on these. But, the maiden name of the mother would be indexed as they have done.

Hi Mary! Thank you for posting your question here. We are supposed to assume nothing from the records, and transcribe only what the record says. If, for example, the father's name is John Smith, and the mother is only listed as Sarah, then only include Sarah for the name. Mark the surname field for Sarah as "blank." I hope this helps!
