I completely agree, Cremation is quickly replacing burials and needs to be an option in the Vital section.

Remember that a cremation is NOT a burial. It is simply the event where the body is prepared PRIOR to the event for the disposition of it, whether that be in the ground, in the sea, or in an urn on someone's mantle. It's like mummification. It's just another way of preparing the body before burial or any other place it will be stored.

Everyone will return to the earth (burial) eventually. That is why burial is a vital. But not everyone has their body cremated or mummified, which is why information about it has not traditionally been considered a vital.

"Traditionally" needs to be changed when it comes to Cremation.

I understand about the Tradition thing.

Also I wanted to clarify that I was not opposed to the ideas behind the suggestion. I was just emphasizing that a cremation is not a burial, and event data about a cremation does NOT belong in the Burial data fields.

As the number of records including cremation data increases I would not have any real significant problems with a "Cremation" field being added in the Vitals. A cremation is to a burial the same as a Christening is to a birth. They are both related records and frequently not both are present.

But only as the number of cremation entires starts to become significant relative to the number of Burial entries. And FS would need to determine that. In the meantime I'm happy with recording the cremations in the Other Information area and the burials of those same people in the Burials field.

E.g., when will we start adding "mummification" events to the vitals area as well?

Having a pop-down on "Burial" with a list one can click on which would replace "Burial" with Cremation, or Other. In Other, one could type in the burial type, such as - (Frozen) or (Shot Into Space) or (Mummification). What about those who die at sea, are they really buried? "Burial" just needs to be brought into the diversified world we now live in.

If Cremation is an option on Find A Grave it should be added here as an option in place of Burial under a person's vitals.

I agree with all of the comments above about needing a separate drop down to show type of burial or disposition of the body. Cremation is being used pretty extensively now in the USA and overseas as a way of body disposal. In some countries now, it is illegal to bury a body. Cremation is the only acceptable method of disposal.

This drop down should include burial in a graveyard or cemetery, burial at sea, body lost at sea, body never found (I have one of those cases), cremation - ashes given to family, cremation - ashes scattered - other possibilities.

Please consider these options and stop making the word Cremated as a system error that red flags the entry when I type cremated into the place of burial.

Whilst agreeing with most of the points put forward above (in favour of treating cremation as a "vital"), I still see this as a complicated issue, especially if there were to be an "either/or" choice with "Burial". Presumably, the place name against the cremation would be that of the crematorium, so what if the ashes were buried? Would the latter then become the "Custom Event"?
