"Alternate First Name" and "Alternate Last Name" search boxes automatically open
The "Alternate First Name" and "Alternate Last Name" search boxes open up every time the refine search is updated. It is very annoying. The search parameter should be available only when I select them....just like every other search parameter box...... for example....birth, marriage, residence, death, any, spouse, father, mother, other person.
It didn't use to be this way. Those of us with small screens that are working with this new "feature" now have to do a lot of unnecessary scrolling. Please put it back to the way it was.

I agree, but at least the boxes can be closed immediately the page loads (by clicking on the x to the right of Alternate First Name).
Clicking on the x removes the Alternate Name fields:

I do exactly that over and over again but the very next time the search is updated, they show right back up again. I find this very annoying and wonder why having the "alternate" boxes always open is so important. It is certainly not helpful, at least to me, as I have never even used them.

Whilst I do not disagree with your point, perhaps this has been designed to make us remember we often need to search on at least two names for any female whose name was changed upon marriage. I know I have been initially baffled (especially when making a search via the FamilySearch logo link on the Person page) as to why I have not received the expected results. Then I realise I have searched for an event that would have been recorded in the woman's married name, whereas the maiden name has been brought over from the Person page.
I also have relatives / ancestors who were illegitimate and sometimes are found with their mother's (maiden) name and, at other times, recorded with their stepfather's surname.
So, maybe the developers are just trying to be helpful here, in making those Alternate Name fields the "default" position. Like you, I'd prefer to work things out myself and would be happy without this feature, but I guess others might find it very useful.
