The idea of a digital "community" (no matter what the specifc topic it is applied to) - is usually to bring together users of a system - along with leaders/employees of an organization - and create an environment where any user can ask a question or post information of interest - and be able to get answers/feedback from other members of the community - often by other (non employee) users of the community.

It is based on the more general idea of "communities" in the real world - where you live, have neighbors and friends and trusted people you associate with - with whom you share information and experiences and know-how.
On line communities for sites like FamilySearch are very popular because so much of the work of answering questions and discussing opinions and topics - can be done by people who are not even paid employees - but just general users like you and me - who are interested in the topic.
Thus organizations can create such systems - and maintain and support them - with relatively low admisnitrative costs (as compared to systems where paid employees are doing all the support work).
Also in the community there can and are various message boards or groups where by people can ask questions about specific or general topics of interest.
A Digital Community is one classic example of something called "Crowd Sourcing" - an example of thousands of users - working loosely together with a common goal or interest- even though most of them - are not being paid - but involved because of common interest etc.

Short Answer: Users/Patrons HELPING Users/Patrons.
.
And ..
As an aside ...
.
The "CommunityFamilySearch" Forum does not just relate to "Family Tree" of 'FamilySearch' ...
.
The "CommunityFamilySearch" Forum relates ALL the various "Parts" of 'FamilySearch'.
Within the "CommunityFamilySearch" Forum, there are 'Groups' for ALL, be-it, "Family Tree"; "Searching" (Records); "Indexing"; "Memories"; (for Members of the Church) Connecting us with our Ancestors; as, Family; (Fun) "Activities" doing Genealogy/Family Hidtory; "Researching"; "Getting Started"; "Help" with 'Brick Walls'; Mentoring/Guiding/Assisting/ Teaching/Training; and, much more - ETC; Etc; etc.
.
And, the number; and, variety, of those 'Groups', witihn the "CommunityFamilySearch" Forum, continue to grow/increase.
.
Again ...

Very simple ...
