It was stated quite some time ago that the microfiche would be digitised after the completion of the digitisation of ALL the microfilms. The latter was supposed to be completed by the end of 2020, but I am still coming across catalogue entries for microfilms which have not yet been digitised, so when the microfiche will be digitised is open to question.

However, possibly the microfiche will be considered to be subject to copyright, like a book, so even if the microfiche are digitised perhaps they will not be available for access unless you are in the Family History Library.

    • The majority of FamilySearch's vast microfilm collection (2.4M rolls) has now been digitized and are available online.
    • The remaining microfilms (less than 350,000 rolls) are being digitally scanned and are projected to be completed sometime in 2021. https://media.familysearch.org/update-familysearch-digital-records-access-replacing-microfilm/

What a shame FamilySearch does not update us on important issues like this. We should not necessarily expect exact (or even estimated) dates, just confirmation that the original plan is still being followed and (subject to the usual agreements) microfiche records will be digitised after completion of the microfilm collection.
