Fixing incorrect merges

I am working on a family (Jonathan Hoyle LZ21-G2K and Sarah Rushworth LC6B-HFQ) who are now a combination of two families who lived about 25 miles apart. There were two Jonathan Hoyles who married Sarahs in Yorkshire (probably more) but in this instance my Jonathan Hoyle married Sarah Rushworth, and lived in Keighley. The other Jonathan Hoyle married Sarah Smith Spivey, widow of Ben Spivey. There are census records for both families attached, and children of both families are on the record.
I do not know if they were incorrectly merged or if someone simply started attaching incorrect census records and added the children from those records. If I could see birth, spouse, etc in the merged record it would be incredibly helpful to correcting the record and separating the families.
I did find Jonathan Hoyle MVD6-3YB and Sarah Spivey MVD6-3B8 in familysearch from the marriage record. I could begin to flesh out those profiles and bring all the children over, but if the original problem is from an incorrect merge I don't want to do that.
Or is there another tip that makes this less intensive than restoring each merge to check?
EDIT: I found a record for Sarah Smith Spivey and Benjamin Spivey, and merged the Sarah Spivey MVD6-3B8, added Jonathan Hoyle and their children who were incorrectly added to my relative.
