Please make the index for New York land deeds more useful

A van Helsdingen said: FS needs the permission of the record owners to make indexes of records. This is a possible reason why the index is so basic. Many government agencies in that state are very reluctant to make genealogical records public, so the group Reclaim the Records has sued a number of them, and has won every lawsuit.
The owners of the records want to charge people to view the records. Having a detailed and free index will reduce the number of people who'll go on to purchase a copy of the originals.
If you live in the United States, make sure to participate in the primary and general elections for your County Clerk, who has a lot of power over access to genealogical records from the county.0 -
