Janet said: The indexing from 'England, Cambridge Parish Registers, 1538-1983' have all been transcribed in the 'Event Place' as in Hampshire. They are very different English counties and could be confusing and misleading to anyone unfamiliar with the counties!
Please could it be corrected?

A van Helsdingen said: I did a search of that collection for "Smith". Most of the place names are in Cambridgeshire, but I saw one record- in Basingstoke- that was recorded as Hampshire.

I can find no evidence online that there is any other Basingstoke other than the one in Hampshire.

It seems then that these records have been placed in the wrong historical record collection.

Unfortunately, there are a number of metadata problems of a similar nature. They have been reported to FamilySearch over a period of several years, but I can't think of one that has been corrected. On the other hand, I contacted the FreeREG website (very limited resources - volunteer indexers, like FamilySearch) over a mistake and they changed an incorrect surname spelling within 48 hours!

I share your frustration to the point of exasperation!

I wrote a message (see link) adding to a then five month old discussion on Get Satisfaction over a year ago. Here I am again adding to yet another 5 month old post! Nothing much has changed other than the set (or parts of the set) have now been called England, Cambridge Parish Registers, 1538-1983. Much of the Cambridgeshire information in the dataset has been assigned to Hampshire where loose places names in Hampshire have been stretched to correspond to the actual (correct) place names in Cambridgeshire e.g. Linton, Cambridgeshire has morfed into Winton in Andover, Hampshire. Melbourne, Cambridgeshire has morfed into Shelbourne, Hampshire. See image of a couple of examples representative of hundreds if not thousands of incorrect entries.

I have tried to ignore this problem but with hundreds of ancestors and relatives in Cambridgeshire I feel I can no longer keep ignoring the hints NOR can I attach them incorrectly. It is just VERY BAD genealogy and makes one seriously question the credibility of FamilySearch.

Perhaps you could try using the Errors? button at the bottom of the catalog page to report your problem, but whether this would be effective, who knows?

Although Family Search calls itself "the largest genealogy organization in the world" to me, a non LDS church member, it appears to have quite different priorities to the other genealogical organisations and matters concerning Records appear to be far down the list. Most technical resources appear to be devoted to Family Tree
