Old occupation definition?I found a marriage allegation for Thomas Hopkins dated 10 June 1796 in Llandaff diocese which seems to indicate that his occupation was "watcher & searcher". Where can I look for what this might mean? Thomas lived in the parish of Sully in Glamorganshire, Wales.

There are probably several websites that could help. http://rmhh.co.uk/occup/index.html indicates that a searcher worked for the customs and would have been working against smugglers. The National Archives in England has records for the Customs service. Few are indexed.

A book titled Tracing Your Ancestors in the National Archives by Amanda Bevan has information on records for customs officers. It may point to additional sources for your research on Thomas Hopkins. https://www.amazon.com/Tracing-Your-Ancestors-National-Archives/dp/1903365899
