I feel kind of silly asking, but how would you trace all the way back that far to find out if I am related to Hernan Cortez.

Hard work and extensive research ...

    .

    Now ...

    Seriously ...

    .

IF, your "Ancestral Lines" in "Family Tree" of 'FamilySearch' were extensive enough (ie. went back through many generation); THEN, if you are lucky and all the connections/links are there ... and, you have not already ... you could try (BYU) "RelativeFinder" ...

    .

(BYU) "RelativeFinder" digs (pun intended) a lot DEEPER in "Family Tree" of 'FamilySearch', than 'FamilySearch' does.

    .

(BYU) "RelativeFinder" is one of the "Third Party" Applications that "Certified" to work with "Family Tree" of 'FamilySearch'.

    .

BYU = Brigham Young University, in Provo, Utah, USA (ie. the Church University).

    .

From the "Family History Technology Laboratory", of the "Computer Science" Department.

    .

Here is direct link to "RelativeFibder"

    https://www.relativefinder.org/#/main

    .

    Relative Finder _ BYU _ v2.

"RelativeFinder" has many 'Bells and Whistles', that you might find useful.

    .

    Magic.

    .

    Enjoy.

    As an aside ...

    .

    WikiPedia

    Hernán Cortés

Hernán Cortés de Monroy y Pizarro Altamirano

1st Marquess of the Valley of Oaxaca

    ( 1485 – 2 December 1547 )

    https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hernán_Cortés

    .

    FamilySerach

    Family Tree

Hernán Cortés de Monroy y Pizarro Altamirano

( about 1485, Medellín, Badajoz, Extremadura, España -

. 2 December 1547, Castilleja de la Cuesta, Sevilla, Andalucía, España )

    FamilySearch Person Identifier (PID): L6DG-FLT

    .

[ You could use that PID in (BYU) "RelativeFinder" ]

    .

    =====

    .

(BYU) "RelativeFinder" has some interesting options ...

    .

There is an option to see if there is a 'Connection' between yourself and a "Deceased" individual/person in "Family Tree" of 'FamilySearch'.

    .

Relative Finder _ BYU _ Connect Yourself with a Deceased.

There is an option to see if there is a 'Connection' between two (x2) "Deceased" individuals/person in "Family Tree" of 'FamilySearch'

    .

Relative Finder _ BYU _ Connect Two Deceased.

There is an option to see if there is a 'Connection' between ("Living" - Users/Patrons) Friends in "Family Tree" of 'FamilySearch'.

    .

Relative Finder _ BYU _ Connect with Friends.

    Give it a go ...

    .

    I hope this helps.

There are various factors - that very much affect the answer to your question

What kind of research have you done already to find the answer to the question?

Do you have some sort of family documents or material that makes it seem probable this is the case? or is this just an oral family legend that has been passed down and no one really has any documentation to point to??

Brett points to Relative Finder - which is a cool tool - that could possibly show your relationship to Crotes - but that is ONLY IF - the line is completely recorded within Family Search between you and Cortes.

Another point is that many of these Conquistadores had illegitimate relationships

if that is the case and the relationship was not recognized by Cortes - good luck in tryng to establish that.

BUT if you are from a legitimate line - I would think it not unlikely that with some research - of his family - and assuming you have family records that take you back various generations - that you could possibly ascertain the relationship.

here are some links on Cortes

here is Cortes within FamilySEarch Family Tree

    https://www.familysearch.org/tree/person/details/L6DG-FLT

and using the descendants view - and setting it to 4 generations

you can see various of his descendants
