Why the adopting out of my father and his brother?
I know the birth parents of my father and uncle, but I really want to know WHY! Their mother seems to have dropped off of our planet earth. I also do not have any knowledge as to where his older brother went. The boys were born in Toronto, York, Ontario, Canada in 1893 and 1895. Does anyone know how to get this information?
Thanks to anyone who can direct me to the right place for this nagging question. I am now 72 years old & not leaving this earth until I fine out what happened. I want the history of my blood relatives!
@Caroline Manser Rayner i am going to share this with the @Adoption and Unknown Family Research Community group, there are some really wonderful and helpful volunteers here who may be able to help you. We would ask that you share the names and birth/death dates, adoption agency, locations, birth parents info and adoptive parents info; and/or any other info that could be helpful. Sometimes the reason for the adopting out is included in court records; perhaps the birth parents died. In many cases that I’ve seen, one parent would die and the other wouldn’t be able to care for the children....or if the birth parents fell on hard times, and couldn’t afford to take care of them, or were sent to the “poor house”, many times the children would be taken by the courts and adopted out... there are a lot of avenues to explore; if you could share the info you have, we may be able to help you find some answers to some of your questions 😊0
In Ontario the adoption records did not start until the 1920's
They could have been adopted privately or put in an orphanage
Check for the death records of the parents or maybe family took them in
You could contact the Adoption registry in Ontario to see if they can give you some insight on where to get the information but most is more current adoptions
archives of Ontario may have some info
DNA may be a viable option in finding descendants of those children0
Yes they do have orphanages/institution records before 1920
The Adoption Act of 1921 then had a central records location & records were sealed
You can read more on how to find records before that time
I used the Adoption Disclosure Registry in the late 90's to find my siblings
This registry is for more recent adoptions (after 1921)0
You could search the City directories for the parents to see when/where they lived
