First column under Davin, John - do I index Colby as a separate surname since it's listed as part of a business name? Same for all business names that include last names listed after a person's name? Do I list deceased spouses?

First column under Davin, John - do I index Colby as a separate surname since it's listed as part of a business name? Same for all business names that include last names listed after a person's name? Also, several entries have a deceased spouse listed after a name, are those also indexed?

@Dawnia Renelle Walker​ These are fun records, but certainly take some time to work through them. Thank you for asking clarifying questions.

 

• First & Second Questions: Davin, John, then Colby as a surname, and Davin as a surname. So three people there. We can probably assume that the Davin is that person, but as we don't know for sure we index the repeated surname. In the project instructions, it states: Index names of employers and and employees. When indexing business names, index the names of individuals only. For example, "The Ad Book" would not be indexed, but "Barner Kehlenbeck Wines and Liquors" should be indexed. In this case, you would create 2 entries. One for Barner (surname) and another for Kehlenbeck (surname). Do not index occupations or terms such as, "banker," "policeman," "M.D.," or similar terms.

 

• Remember one thing when doing all the names. If just Davis is repeated other places, you just need to index that record once - provided all of the fields for that record is the same. The Project Instructions state: Index each unique name. Some names may be duplicated. When names are exact duplicates, index only the first instance of the name listed. Skip the other exact duplicates and then index the next unique name. Unique names include names with different middle initials, spouses listed with the individual, and different name spellings. 

 

• Yes, deceased spouses are indexed, but without the title of "wid" or such. So Davis, Amelia (wid John), you would just index John for the given name and not index a surname as they are not to be assumed. The project Instructions say: A spouse's name, if listed, may have been recorded in parentheses after the name of the principal individual.
