I'm looking for a marriage record of my grandparents - George Douglas Wells Baker and Helen Clementi
George was born in Bedford, England in 1885, father Alfred Baker, mother Lizzie Jane Mann
Helen was born in Buckie, Scotland in 1888, father James Stewart, mother Mary Ann Forbes
Thank you.

That is a tough one. It is not coming up in LaFrance or Ancestry, in any reasonable variations I could think of. Did they possibly marry before they arrived in Canada?

Hi Linda - thank you for replying. I don't know where they were married but was going on the assumption that they met and married in Quebec as immigration records show George arriving to Quebec with his parents and sister in 1906 and Helen arriving to Quebec in 1908 - she is shown as single. Both indicate religion as Church of England if that helps. Their first child Claude Stewart Baker was b.1910 and d.1921 (I found his death registration in the Quebec Vital and Church Records (Drouin Collection) - Greenfield Park - Anglican Church). I found a record for 2 daughters Lillian b.1911 and Victoria b 1912 in the Drouin Collection who were baptised together in 1912 (Anglican, Saint Edward, Montreal) They had several more children and census records show them in the Montreal area during that time.

I am stumped on this one. I couldn't find a Vermont record (Protestants close to the border sometimes married in Vermont, but folks in Montreal didn't typically do that; there were sufficient churches closer by). I saw the children's info too. I can't figure it out. I am so stumped!!! Either they were married some place without records (?) or their names were so hard to read they aren't indexed correctly. A family record might be your best bet, if there is anything any of your relatives have (you said they were your grandparents) - a family bible entry or letter or something.

I'm wondering about wedding dresses or anything that might be still in the family???? Or any of you older relatives who remember your grandmother talking about her marriage and who her attendants were, etc.??? There has to be something!!! But it is sure hard to find.
I am in Vermont, by the way. Where are you located?

I appreciate your efforts! It has been frustrating for sure and I also can’t find where or when he died. Last known info I have is a letter from him to his eldest daughter in 1948 with return address in Penner, Sussex, England. A cousin said her mother received a letter from him around 1953 but so far has not found it. My grandparents split up and he returned to England when my father was young. Growing up no one talked about him or seemed to know much. My father and all his siblings have died and as well, their family home in Montreal was destroyed in a fire in 1924 so any earlier photos/records were lost.
The family moved to the Windsor, Ontario / Detroit, Michigan area around 1925 I think and I’m from Windsor. You live in a beautiful area - I saw so many photos this year of gorgeous Fall colours in Vermont!!

Some other thoughts ... I found the death and burial records for George’s father Alfred Winslow Baker in Scotstown, Quebec. My cousin thought Helen went to that town when she originally arrived in Quebec so perhaps they met and married there. She also thought they both worked for a newspaper - Helen was a typesetter in Scotland before emigrating.
