The "relationship to me" tool basically just walks back all you ancestral lines and all of the lines of the other person looking for the common ancestor that you both share who is the closest to both of you. If there is a break in the tree between you and them, technically you have no documented relationship with them and you'll get that message.
However, it is far more likely that your common ancestor (if it is documented by linked records in the tree) is more than 14 generations back (15 when you include yourself). That is just a limitation of the tool. As it searches back through each generation, the number of records it has to look at goes up exponentially at least doubling each time. FS has to set a limit somewhere and at present it is 15 generations.
By the way, you said "when I click on an ancestor". Did you really mean an "ancestor", i.e., a parent/grandparent somewhere back on your direct line? If so, and they are closer than 15 generations, then you should get a proper response from the tool.
However there is one other thing that this might be. When you or the other person has an ancestor that has belonged to more that one family, I do not know if the "Relationship to me" tool walks up both of that ancestor's lines. The pedigree charts will not. It will only use the parents marked as "Preferred". I would hope that the "Relationship to me" tool would search all ancestral lines. But if it only uses your "Preferred" parents for your ancestors, that might be another reason the tool is failing to give you a report.

As an aside ...

Just a thought ...

IF, you have not already; THEN, ...
.
You can always try (BYU) "RelativeFinder".
.
(BYU) "RelativeFinder" digs (pun intended) a lot DEEPER in "Family Tree" of 'FamilySearch', than 'FamilySearch' does (well beyond the 15 Generations).
.
(BYU) "RelativeFinder" is one of the "Third Party" Applications that "Certified" to work with "Family Tree" of 'FamilySearch'.
.
BYU = Brigham Young University, in Provo, Utah, USA (ie. the Church University).

From the "Family History Technology Laboratory", of the "Computer Science" Department.

Family Tree provides a View My Relationship feature to show your potential relationship to an individual included in the tree. In this feature, the chart can show 15 generations up and 15 generations down from the person you are viewing.

ps: Hence, my suggestion to use (BYU) "RelativeFinder" ...
.
pps: Provided your "Ancestral" Lines in "Family Tree" of 'FamilySearch' are extensive enough, (BYU) "RelativeFinder", really works - I know, I use it ...
