Thank you for sharing such an amazing photograph! I do hope you have made a archival quality copy of both this picture and the other.
I love seeing pictures like this. My mother was a florist at the Ohlsdorfer Friedhof, in Hamburg, Germany. This cemetery is the largest park-like cemetery in northern Europe. As a florist apprentice, my mother was hired to go with another florist, to decorate graves at different times of the year.
A few years ago, around this time during Easter, my son and I were in Hamburg, for a brief three day visit. There is more to this story, but for now, I would rather focus on the cemetery. We rode the bus to the cemetery, and wandered it's grounds, where we happened on to a WWI memorial. There was one grave stone after another as far as the eye could see. Much like Arlington National Cemetery. Only the stones were mossy. The experience was sobering, since my son was being invited to attend a military college.
Seeing photographs like these remind me of the fact that these soldiers had hobbies, interests, played instruments, and were doing their duty. Seeing a photo like this, puts a name to a face, and adds a new memory.
