    .

Is it an actual (pop-up) "Login-In" (into 'FamilySearch') 'Window'?

    .

Or, is it that (pop-up) 'Box' that pop-sup towards the Bottom right-hand-corner indicating that the "Merge"/"Combine" was SUCCESSFUL?

    .

IF, it is an actual (pop-up) "Login-In" (into 'FamilySearch') 'Window'; THEN, perhaps you have taken too long to process the "Merge"/"Combine"; and, gone over the 20 Minute or so (sometimes longer) of INACTIVITY in the "System", which has logged you out, where you need to log back in again.

    .

I cannot recall experiencing this during "Merging"/"Combining"; but, it certainly can happen.

    .

If you remember, can you try to take a "Screenshot" of it next time; and, post it here.

    Hi Brett!

I'm already logged in when the glitch occurs and it seems to happen when I attempt to merge individuals and have several windows open for long periods of time. The actual Login window pops up, but it doesn't let me proceed with the merge. Even when I attempt to log on to it several times in a row. The screen just keeps popping up to log on. I can back up and do other work, it just won't let me merge. Sometimes I can switch the mergees or use a different window and that will work half the time. The only other way out of it, is to close all my work and try again. It doesn't happen all the time. But its frustrating when I'm in the middle of working on these trees and have to close everything and restart. Next time it happens, I'll try an take a screen shot. But it's just the regular log in screen that pops up when a session expires. Except I'm already logged in and am able to search etc. I just can't merge, unless I close out and start over or I figure a way to trick the system. I also use my phone to do some research, but close the apps before I use my laptop. When I am in the middle of doing several treees, I leave some windows up for days on my laptop and let the sessions expire. Then log on when I get back to it and refresh the screens. This problem has been happening for a few weeks now. I figure it's a software glitch.

    Hello @Bob Fernald

Occasionally deleting cookies from your browser can help that kind of problem. FamilySearch.org etc, are big sites and can clog up your browser with unneeded tags.

    Hope this might help.

    Thank you,

    @Anitra Whittle

    "long periods of time"

chances are your session timed out. . .

and that explains why you get a log on popup.

chances are it really has nothing to do with the merge process nor is it a bug nor that it is a result of your browser getting overworked.

but if you start a merge process - and then let it hang while you do your research on the two people - and then an hour later you click merge

chances are you have timed out by then.

dont leave processes like this in limbo for very long periods of time.

rather - do your research and then start the process from scratch - ensuring that your session is still active and on line before you start the process.

That's not what is happening to me. When I leave the site open for long periods of time, of course the session times out. It times out in too short of a period of time, as far as I am concerned. It certainly times out when I go away. When I am ready to come back and restart the session, I either log back on to a new page or choose one of the windows that I had previously left open, refresh all the pages and continue. I have an active session when this glitch occurs. I seem to be able to do every other function, except merge. The log on pops up when I am already actively logged onto the session. I am not timed out. When I try to log onto the pop up. It just pops up another log on window and will not let me proceed with the merge. I have to back out. Sometimes I can trick it by switching the persons around or using a different window. Sometimes I have to log off, close all my windows, reopen the site and log back on. It is not a timed out session issue.

Hello Bob. Have you tried deleting cookies on your Browser?

Over time, a large cache of temporary files and cookies accumulate and can cause problems when you use the FamilySearch website.

Many internet browsers, such as Chrome, Edge, and Firefox, allow you to delete temporary files, cookies, and other items when you press these three keyboard keys at the same time:

    • Ctrl+Shift+Del (Windows users).
    • Cmd+Shift+Del (Mac users).

Each browser handles this combination slightly differently by opening a new screen in your browser, which enables you to select specific items to delete.

Safari users needing to clear the cache and cookies can follow these steps:

    1. In the upper left side of your screen, click Safari. In the menu that appears, click Preferences.
    2. In the window that appears, click the Privacy tab. Click the button Manage Website Data.
    3. In the pop-up window that appears, click Remove Now.

I ONLY delete for Basic and only for 4 weeks.

    Enjoy,

    @Anitra Whittle

Clearing the cache and cookies seems to help! Thanks again Anitra!

However, I have had a similar problem recently. I can't say I've linked it to the merging procedure, but after I enter my password / username I get another screen in its place, requesting a further log in, then another and (if I have multiple FamilySearch tabs open) yet another! This has never happened to me in the past (I usually only have to log back in once and that's it), so there there does seem to be some kind of bug - even if clearing cookies helps deal with it.

Hi Paul! Glad I'm not the only one! I'm still using a Windows 7 laptop with Firefox as my browser. The persistent logon pop ups recently happened to me again, but on a different function than merge. So it seems to be random. Clearing the cache and cookies seems to help. I haven't had as much trouble since.
