Where Are They?

UPDATE: I found them! The year in the manifest had been filled out incorrectly, so it didn't come up right when I searched for it. Anyway, all is well. I got a bit of interesting new information.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

This is a bit complicated, so I hope you'll bear with me. This is about Manuel Vargas (9F9H-66C), his wife Theresa (9F9H-66V), and their first two children, Eleanor (LKTL-SGR) and Marian (LKTL-SLD). All four were born on Faial, in the Azores. As best I can tell, Manuel immigrated to the US alone. At some later point, his wife and children came along too. A government certificate (created at a later time) shows that the children (and therefore probably their mother) arrived on the S.S. Peninsular in New Bedford, MA on October 12, 1906. I then consulted the passenger lists for that date, which have been indexed. You can find them here: https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/3:1:3Q9M-C9YV-HW9L-3?i=254&cc=3465361&cat=291700. Start at image 255.

The lists show that the S. S. Peninsular did indeed dock at New Bedford on October 12, 1906. However, I can find no passenger who resembles any of my relatives. Where are they? The lists are long, and it's possible I might have missed something. Perhaps someone can find something? I'd very much appreciate it.

A final piece of information: According to naturalization documents, Eleanor was admitted under the name Leonor de Jesus de Vargas, and Marian was admitted under the name Mariannade [de] Jesus de Vargas. Manuel and Theresa were never naturalized, so I don't know under what name they were admitted.

Let me know if I can give any additional information. Thanks in advance for any help that can be provided.

@LegacyUser is looks like you were able to find the answer to your question yourself. We have all had experiences where we had to change spellings or look at other dates to find records. It's a matter of "playing" with different ideas to find that illusive document.

So cool that you were able to locate your family! Did you learn anything new from the passenger list?

Thanks, @Anne LoForte Willson. I found some information about another family member (a nephew of Manuel and Theresa) who traveled with them, which should enable further research. More importantly, though, I was able to find a Portuguese passport record for Theresa, which looks as though it has all sorts of interesting information. It's difficult to read (and in Portuguese to boot), so I asked for help in the FamilySearch Portugal group. Here's the link if anyone's curious - Thereza de Jesus, second entry from the top. http://culturacores.azores.gov.pt/biblioteca_digital/PASSAPORTES-FAL-1889-1908/PASSAPORTES-FAL-1889-1908_item1/P229.html
