Seaman Washed Overboard
Hi, I'm trying to confirm the death of the spouse of one of my great great grandmothers. She was ostensibly married to John Jacob Miller (Muller?) who was washed overboard while working on the passenger line City of Washington (and not recovered). I believe this happened circa 1862. Can someone recommend any online databases/resources? Originally I assumed he was British (GGG is British), then I thought American since he was traveling back and forth to the US. The ship belonged to the Norwegian Inman line, I think.

Please provide additional information on John. Do you know when he was born or a more specific date regarding his death. What is your great grandmother's name, do you know when and where she was born, her parents, her death date and place? Are John or your Great Grandmother in the FamilySearch Family Tree, if so what are their ID numbers?

I'm afraid I don't have a lot more information. His date of death was either July 1861 or 1862. My GGgrandmother was Harriet Rosina Bates, born in England. The only information I have on John Jacob Miller is from the widow's claim she filed for her 2nd husband's Civil War invalid pension. She was pretty specific about the ship's name and even identifies the captain, which I cannot quite read. Yes, she is in my the family tree #[LBT5-THB.] I just added John Jacob Miller. I've tried looking for marriage records, immigration records....but John Miller is a common name and I have not had any luck finding more information about him.
If you have any other suggestions for me I'd appreciate them. And thank you for the article - I'm going to read it now.
