I traced back an Austrian Ancestor to Pfenningen, Balingen, Wurtemburg, Germany and found a film from there (FHL #2374893) that is listed in the catalog as "Probate Records". The section titles on the film say "INVENTUREN V THEILUNGEN PFEFFINGEN".

Every frame on the film is the same format as the attached sample. Any idea what this is?

So this is an index of probate records. you can easily read the surname and first name listed at the top. The second indented line is his occupation, for women, I saw several that listed their maiden name "geb." rather than occupation. The bottom left is the reference and what type of document it is. I don't know what all the letter codes mean, but you can read the year, and the page or article number. The / number on the right is probably the day/month of that record. So, this can help in two possible ways. 1. this can help you locate your ancestors probate (transfer of property at death, includes wills) if you can figure out where those actual probate records are held. 2. There are church records for Pfeffingen for this time period, so you could match up the probate date with the death/burial record in the church record to see if there is any additional information in the church records.

This page tells you how to locate the actual probate records:
