just make sure you dont overlay information already entered into the system by others.

in Spanish and Portuguese "de - surname" often indicates that such surname is the surname of her husband.

do is the word "of" or "from" and "coracoa de jesus" is a place in Portugal you can find more info on by just doing a google search.

Sometimes it is just trial and error and using the filters to get better results. I tried several different combinations. When using de Jesus, 350,243 results were returned. Narrowing that by placing Portugal in the Residence field, and marking de Jesus as a required exact match, resulted in 329 results. When using do Coracao de Jesus, 32 results were returned. Using de Azevedo do Coracao de Jesus returned no results. Removing de Azevedo returned 24 results with given names of Teresa or Thereza or Theresa and Surname variations of do Coração de Jesus in records from Brazil and Portugual. I hope this helps. Good luck!

I was helping a friend enter family names on FamilySearch. She had received an unsourced pedigree chart from her father's first cousin. This cousin had hired "someone" to prepare this family history for her. That is all I know. I just need direction on entering the names correctly. We plan to look for sources after we enter the pedigree on FamilySearch.

anything following "do." is probably not part of the surname.

    Hi Patricia and all,

The problem is that up until 1928 there was no real government rule regarding surnames. Register books were kept by Parishes up until 1911 (most of them now available), after that Portugal became a Republic and some name rules begin to be enforced.

I have recently read a book regarding Portuguese Genealogy. It has a full chapter regarding names.

So in short all that has been said could be correct. Coração de Jesus was a Lisbon Parish (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cora%C3%A7%C3%A3o_de_Jesus_(Lisbon)) and Azevedo could have been the husband's surname (if she was married)

So it could have been some Teresa de Azevedo do Coração de Jesus, meaning some Teresa married with Mr. Azevedo from Coração de Jesus OR Teresa de Azevedo (married or not) came from Coração de Jesus (as there might have been another Teresa de Azevedo.

But also it might just mean her maiden surname, plus the place she came from. It really depends on the year, epoch we are talking about.

As you mention a document do you want to share just her bit as I can help tranlate, whatever information comes with the name, that might be helpful?

Finally, if I were you, I would leave for the time being Teresa as a name and the rest as a surname.
