Can anyone help me find the parents of Barney S. Stewart born 1857 in Mississippi? I have searched land, Bible, birth, death and census records to name a few. He died in Arkansas abt 1910. It seems he magically appeared abt 1880 in Alcorn Mississippi.

Birth records in Mississippi did not begin Statewide for Mississippi until 1912, but until 1921 there was not general compliance. Alcorn, Mississippi has information about records from November 1, 1912 on file. This means that you will not find a birth record for Barney. You will be relying on alternative records to find any information about Barney's parents.

 

The 1880 census indicates that Barney's father was born in Georgia and his mother in Mississippi. This doesn't give you an answer, but it does give you a clue.

 

I did check the 1792-1866 Mississippi, State and Territorial Census Collection to see if Barney was mentioned, but he was not listed. There were 9 Stewart families listed, but none were in Alcorn County.

 

You might want to try searching Biographical or Historical books for Alcorn, Mississippi to search for Stewart families. Sometimes these biographies will tell a family story, or there will be clues that help you find relatives. I am a big fan of using the FAN club to find more about unknown relatives. I am not saying that this Stewart family is related to your Barney, but you might want to add this information to what you have and use this to help eliminate or confirm other Stewart's that you find in Alcorn County.
