We have been told that we don't know our real surname, but it had been changed to that of a ship cap

We have been told that we don't know our real surname, but it had been changed to that of a ship captain "Williams." Another tree for Edward Williams (LKGB-SY1) lists "Legacy NFS Source: Edward Williams - Government record:

Census record: birth-name: Samuel Brashears." Excited that this could be him. Have hit a brick wall here. Would appreciate any direction for help. Thank you so much.

    Sajoba, where is your family from? Where did you learn the surname Williams and Brashears? Can you share some background for these names?
