Flag Day - June 14

June 14 is Flag Day. It is a day that some celebrate and others who have not found what they are looking for in this Nation do not celebrate. Some people stand for the Pledge of Allegiance and others choose not to. From its beginning days this Nation has used the flag as a symbol of our Country.

The design of the flag has changed over the years, but it is something that we should ponder about its meaning and significance to us individually. As the years have progressed, the causes which have presented themselves have been granted to us are a result of the freedom that we enjoy. That freedom has come because of the sacrifices and dreams of past and present generations. The Flag is a symbol of those who have made and are making sacrifices and dreaming for a better Nation. June 14 is Flag Day, long shall it wave.

When I was thinking about Flag Day, I did some pondering and thinking about when and why my ancestors came to America. I also thought about historic events (wars, Civil Rights) and other events that helped shape America.

I remember my great grandmother talking about when she was able to vote. When she told me this story, I thought that she was referring to being "old enough" to vote. Years later, I realized that she was sharing with me about women being allowed to vote. I wish that I had realized this at the time. I would love to have asked her if she was involved in Women's Rights. Was she a suffragette?

I think that we often miss valuable clues, because we haven't applied a historical aspect to the histories of our families.
