How to find out if someone was a member of the Latter-day Saint Church?

I was looking at my great grandfather’s military documents from his death in 1965 and it had him listed as “Mormon”. I assumed I was the only member in my family but now I’m wondering if that’s true. Is there a way to find out if he ever got baptized or was a member? Thanks!

You should be able to find him somewhere FamilySearch Family Tree. However, if he stopped attending church, the church might never have marked his death on his membership record and it wouldn't show up. You can submit a help request (FamilySeearch.org > Help > Contact Us) giving his name, birth date and location, parents' names and death date and location to see if they can find a membership record for him. You will probably need to submit proof of his death as well, (a funeral program, obituary or death certificate.) I've done this for some cousins that have died recently who were not active in the church at the end of their lives; even finding one whose name had changed because of adoption. The only exception would be if he was excommunicated. in that case, they wouldn't be able to find a membership record for him.

@laurabrittanywilson laurabrittanywilson  I saw somewhere, I think it was on familysearch.org there is a listing or maybe even an indexed searchable database of members ... I don’t remember the years, but if play around with search criteria on the site you should be able to find it in the catalog...I can look later, if I find it I’ll post the link for you 😊 good luck!

Yes, his name is Jesus Gonzalez Santiago, although in the Army, he only used Gonzalez. His birthday according to military records is December 12, 1910. He was born in Peñuelas, Puerto Rico. That’s all I know.

I see him recorded in FamilySearch Family Tree - under at least two different records - neither of which shows an LDS baptism (though this should not be interpreted as proof that he wasnt baptized LDS)
