As someone who has been doing genealogy for a little over a year and is already following 3245 profiles - with no end in sight - I concur.
I check my following list almost everyday. About once a week, on average, I have to clean up another user's mess.1 -
Even if there's no practical limit, you might want to follow mostly just direct ancestors so that your efforts are focused on those that mean the most. It is easy to get side-tracked, and if your living relatives are like mine, nobody else will care that you put in so much time and effort on distant cousins.

From my experience, I think 4000 is a good limit and will keep most people pretty busy monitoring updates.

I use the labels to keep my Following lists organized. However, I really wish they would allow more labels. I have asked several times, but no response. 😕

CMichael7, mmmm i am only doing work for those that i am related to, even if they are distant cousins. You cannot submit temple work for anyone you are not related too. It is difficult to find relatives records overseas, hence doing the "cuzzie" work in Australia where i am from. I don't know how to delete 4000 follows unless I look at them one by one, and I do delete people if I come across someone who I am not related to (since they made the changes to who you can submit work for, as back then I followed everyone). I am sure that the "cuzzie's" appreciate someone doing their work for them. Thanks for your thoughts

@Just Me Again 22 This help article says that you can follow up to 4000 people. (Is that where you got the number 4000?)

The request be be able to follow more than 4,000 profiles has been made from my early days of using Family Tree - so well over ten years.
My own opinion is that following any number above that would probably require a user to be able to devote an amount of time to FamilySearch activity that the majority of users just wouldn't have spare. I have just over 2,000 on my Following list and it can frequently take me many hours - even days - to correct the errors other users make on a regular basis.
Be careful what you wish for (as the expression goes), as - if you are conscientious - you could well end up with far more work than you could cope with.
