Lookup request: Baza (Granada, Spain), San Juan Bautista, Marriages 1878-1927 (DGS 8089621)
Hello everyone. I am researching a couple who probably married in the parish of San Juan Bautista in Baza (Granada, Spain) between 1878 and 1927. The registers have been digitized as DGS 8089621, but the images are restricted online and can only be viewed at a FamilySearch Center. Would anyone with access to a FamilySearch Center be willing to check the marriages volume 1878-1927 for a marriage between a man surnamed Camanforte (it may also appear as Camenforte or Camonforte) and a woman surnamed Gavilan? The surname is very rare, so it should be easy to spot in the volume's index. Thank you very much in advance.

@Investigador35 I understand how helpful those images can be for your research. Unfortunately, those images are restricted by FamilySearch or other custodial entities. These restrictions are in place to honor agreements and other laws.
If you’re able to visit a FamilySearch Center or an authorized affiliate library, or partner organization you may be able to access them there.

As I understand @Investigador35's post, there was no request for an image but only for evidence of a marriage.
DGS 8089621 is full-text searchable. I've worked with the films for Granada marriages, and full-text search functions well on those. I'll be happy to check for the marriage on my next visit to my affiliate library and provide a transcription.
Full-text search of a limited-access DGS works even from home. 4 marriages for "Cam?nforte" are found on DGS 8089621.5 -
@Investigador35
I visited my FSC this afternoon and checked DGS 8089621
The 25 April 1910 marriage of José Jimenez Gavilan with Maria Barrachina Ferrer lists the parents of José as Manuel Jimenez Ybarra and Catalina Gavilan Camanforte.
The 11 February 1905 marriage of Vicente Camanforte with Agustina Martinez lists the parents of Vicente as Ramón Camanforte Garcia and María Valenciel Rodriguez.The 22 December 1917 marriage of Antonio Ybarra Camanforte with Piedad Pura Pretel lists the parents of Antonio as Antonio y Antonia, with no surnames. [I found other records for the family showing that Antonia's birth surname was Camanforte.]
I then broadened my full-text search beyond that single DGS, searching for the keywords/names Gavilan and Camanforte together within the parish. Pedro Martínez Camanforte was a local priest; his signature caused a few false positives.
I found the 19 December 1890 baptism of Eliza Barbara, daughter of Ramon Martinez and Ana Ybarra. Eliza's paternal grandparents are listed as Tomas Martinez Gavilan and Teresa Camanforte Jimenez.I hope the information I found is useful to you. If you wish me to do further research on another visit, please let me know.

@Aine.ni.Donnghaile Thank you so much for this - it is incredibly useful, and far faster than I expected. I would gladly take you up on your offer. On another visit, could you look for three things, in the 1890-1935 window: 1) any marriage of a Ramon Camanforte (any second surname) or of a Dolores Gavilan; 2) births roughly 1905-1940 of children of couples where one spouse is a Camanforte or Camenforte; 3) any Juan Gavilan married to a woman surnamed Valero. What you already found gives me two couples carrying both surnames in Baza - exactly the link I was hunting. Thank you again for your generosity.

@Aine.ni.Donnghaile One more question, if I may: how exactly did you run the full-text search inside DGS 8089621? I cannot reproduce it - the Cam?nforte wildcard does not work in the keyword field, adding q.filmNumber breaks the search, and the Collection filter offers neither Guadix nor Baza. Could you share the exact steps - a specific filter, a URL parameter, or searching from the film page itself? It would help me enormously with the rest of the parish books. Thanks again!

Dolores Gavilan Guillen married Juan José Garcia Sobrino. Their son, Pedro José Garcia Gavilan, was 24 when he married in 1890.
Dolores Gavilan Parra married Francisco Perales Cano. Their son Yldefonso Perales y Gavilan was 33 when he married in 1897.
That's all I had time for today.1 -
FYI - when you have filtered on the DGS, you generally don't need a place. The only time would possibly be on some older films that contain records from multiple parishes.
And, Baza is available. I used it in my later searches, when I expanded beyond that single DGS. For example:1 -
@Aine.ni.Donnghaile That is exactly what I was missing - the wildcard goes in the Name field of Advanced Search, the film number goes in its own Image Group Number (DGS) field, and the "Include limited access content" toggle must be on. I had the wildcard in Keywords and was forcing the film as a query parameter, which broke everything. Trying it right away. And thank you for the two Dolores Gavilan records - both look like an earlier generation (their sons married in 1890 and 1897), so the hunt continues, but every Gavilan in Baza helps triangulate. I will let you know what turns up.

@Aine.ni.Donnghaile The method works - thank you again. From home I now get the match count for Cam?nforte across the four San Juan Bautista films, but every result card shows only the film title - no name, no snippet - and the image and transcription are blocked as limited access. Is there any way to see the person's name or a snippet for each match from home, or is that only visible inside a center? Even just knowing whether it is possible saves me from chasing settings that do not exist. Thanks as always!

@Investigador35
From home, all you can see of a limited-access record is what I posted in my first message, above.
You can right-click on the hyperlink to capture the URL so you can go directly to the record while at the FSC or AL.1 -
Also - we likely won't find births/baptisms more recent than the mid-1920s. Anything within the last 100 years, more or less, will be protected for the privacy of those who may be living. If a DGS contains earlier and later records, the entire DGS may be restricted until the project separating sections of films is completed.
For example, DGS 8038628 covers marriages 1851-1934, as well as earlier baptisms and deaths. For now, the entire DGS is unavailable for viewing.1 -
@Aine.ni.Donnghaile Thank you - that settles the home-view question, and the right-click tip for the record URL is gold for inside a center. Good to know about the privacy cutoff too: the post-1920s baptisms in my list will be out of reach, but the marriages up to 1927 remain workable, and in parallel I have written to the diocesan archive of Guadix, which holds the original parish books. Thanks again for your time.

@Aine.ni.Donnghaile May I take you up on your generous offer of further research? On a future visit to your FSC, two lookups in the San Juan Bautista records would help me enormously: 1) The baptism of Ramón Camanforte (second surname possibly Martínez), born about 1905-1915, whose parents are unknown to me - the baptism would name them. The surname also appears as Camenforte, Camonforte or Camaforte. 2) The marriage of Ramón Camanforte Martínez and Dolores Gavilán Valero in Baza, year unknown to me. From home, the exact "Ramón Camanforte Martínez" gives no matches in those films, so he may be under a variant or in another parish. No hurry at all - whenever you next visit. Thank you so much.

@Investigador35
I'll be happy to take another look; however, I believe I've made all possible searches with the name/keyword combinations.Full-text searching is not the same as searching indexed records. I can't specify that one person is the parent, child, or spouse of the other. I'm only specifying that both names appear on the same page. As I noted above, the priest, Pedro Martínez Camanforte, returned numerous false positives. In some cases, my searches found grandparents or baptismal sponsors with the mix of names.
FYI - the way you are typing my name in your replies is not tagging me. You'll notice that when I tag you (to notify you of a new comment), your name is a blue hyperlink. You have to allow the system to load my name and select it. It's not a problem, for me, since I'm following this thread. But, if you ever want to tag someone else, you'll need a functioning hyperlink for them to receive a notification.0 -
@Áine.ní.Donnghaile Thank you for clarifying. I understand now that full-text search only shows that the names occur on the same page, not their relationship, and that Pedro Martínez Camanforte creates many false positives. Please do not repeat combinations you have already exhausted. Anything you happen to notice on a future visit will be greatly appreciated. And thank you for the tagging tip - I have selected your name properly this time.
