Los Angeles CA Death Index
Help! No one at the State, County, or City is able to answer my question as to the meaning of the three digit codes found in the historic indexes. I know about the two digit county codes that appear in the computerized print-out, these are not the same. I have identified several hundred names where the record only provides name, date of death, and a code number. I believe the code means that a resident of the city of Los Angeles was buried outside the city but within the county. But where? I have linked the 519R code to a specific cemetary, but the link is inferred. I need proof as in an offical list or manual showing code number and place. Sadly, the people who did the online indexing did not record these codes. If they had it would be easy to find people buried in forgotten and abandoned cemeteries (if my assumption holds true).

@MikeShawn - in fairness, it may not have been the fault of the indexers. It wouldn't be the first time that codes have been found that were known only to the compilers of the original. The key to those codes might have been a separate piece of paper known only to the office clerk. Unfortunately.

@MikeShawn To add to @Adrian Bruce1's comments, the responsibility of indexers is to create a finding aid by copying designated fields into a template. In this case, indexers were working from an index, not the full records. The information recorded worked as intended.
