it would be really nice to have folders in the archive section for later reference - is that possible for the future?

Unfortunately, no, there is currently no way to create Albums in the Archive. That is not a feature that is currently offered; nor is it currently being considered. So sharing your idea in the "Suggest an Idea" (as noted above) is a good plan.
But I hope you do understand that you can place your Memories in an Album AND move them to the Archive. That way, they stay organized in an Album, but do not clutter your main Gallery. That is a best practice….Upload a Memory. Add all the necessary information and Tags. Organize it in an Album. Then move it to your Archive.
