FamilySearch App (5.6.4) on iOS 26.6 - Freezes in edit of data

I'm constantly having issues where my app will freeze trying to edit data (birth, Death, burial, or Marriage). When I try to edit the Date or Place information the app freezes and I have to close the app. I've unloaded and reloaded the app, my iOS is up-to-date. See the attached image. I was trying to add the cemetery name to the field and the app just locked up forcing me to close the app. The only workaround I've been able to use to resolve the problem is to:

  1. Click on the attached hint - FindAGrave.
  2. Click on "Review Attachments" option.
  3. Click on "Detach" option at bottom.
  4. Edit "Burial" detail, apply information, standardize data, and save the data.
  5. Then, select "Yes, Attach" to update the record

Is tech support aware of this issue???

@Chris Premo I am not able to duplicate this problem. I am also using the iOS Family Tree app, version 5.6.4. I'm able to edit places, choose a different standard place, save, etc. The app never locks up on me.

Could you please supply specific steps that you are following? In particular, I'd like to know the exact thing you are doing when it locks up (editing, selecting a standard, saving, etc.). If you're willing, a person ID (PID) would be helpful so that we are editing the exact same event for the same person.

I have been working with another user with the same issue. Hers is also on the iOS family Tree app, version 5.6.4. Her screen freezes after a few minutes when she is adding and changing dates and places on individuals on her tree. I was able to see that happen. She says it also freezes when adding a hint which sounds familiar to Chris's issue above. She says she has to reboot her phone 20 times a day because this is happening so often. She has deleted and reinstalled the app. She said this just started happening a few days ago. Thanks for any additional information you can give.

My Ios phone is also freezing. I keep using Find a Person I can put in the first name, last name, birth year, but when I go to put in the place of birth after two characters it feezes. This happens again and again even if I close and refresh the app. I tried taking off the app and putting it on my phone again but this is still happening.

Thank you for the details. Using clues from all of you, I am now able to consistently reproduce the problem. I have reported it to the mobile engineers.

I was helping another FS user this morning and the find is also freezing. After putting in a name, date, and location, the IOS phone freezes and will not go further. I replicated on my own Apple phone on the Tree app.

This app has been superglitchy for the last week or more on both my iphone and iPad.
App continually freezes, though eventually unfreezes. Faster to close app and revolent.

Rebooted, completely cleaned out my iPad and eventually just bought a new iPad where the app annoyingly exhibits the same bad behaviour. Very frustrating… Hope they debug the app soon.

@Tomlinsonkl Someone needs to ask this question and it may as well be me - can the engineers not temporarily just revert the iOS app to the most recent version that did not have this problem, given how serious and widespread this issue appears to be?

@MandyShaw1 Thanks for brainstorming a possible temporary solution. However, mobile apps can't simply be reverted — the Apple App Store will only allow newer versions of the app to be uploaded. It's possible, of course, to apply a newer version number to an older version of the code, but the release process requires some effort, and the new upload of the older code would still have to go through Apple's app review before it became available to users. In this case, the bug has been fixed and the fix is being tested and will soon be submitted for app review. It would not make sense to go through the review process for the old code, since that would just delay the release of the new code with the bug fix.

I had this problem last night trying to find a person. I could get to the birth place and it would freeze. This was on an iPhone 14 Pro. This morning I tried again after restarting my phone, and deleting and reinstalling the FamilySearch Tree app. When that didn't work, I tried doing it with an SE 2020 and had no problems. I suspect that the problem has to do with the current iOS version 26.6.1 that came out a week or ten days ago. I say that because my SE 2020 is running the beta version 27.0 installed 26 August. that makes it appear to me that the problem is with the Apple iOS, not FamilySearch Tree app.

@Vernon Dunn Are you using version 5.6.5 of the Family Tree app? It's my understanding that that update fixes the problem.

Yes, I was/am using version 5.6.5 on both phones, and it still froze even after I updated my iPhone 14 Pro to iOS 27 beta. Interestingly it works without freezing on my se 2020, also using version 5.6.5.

@Vernon Dunn Thanks for those details. I just learned that 5.6.5 unfortunately did not include the fix for the place picker. The fix will be in the next release, which should be soon.

Thank you so much for responding. I can tell the Lord just wants to teach me patience.

Believe me, I really do appreciate all the diligent work you and the other members of the team do to help make this work go forward. I will wait for the next release. I have always loved the whole FamilySearch bundle of software. Thank you again.

    @Vernon Dunn @Chris Premo @DRPGrigg @JayneCorbett1 @Family-finders

For iOS, version 5.6.6 of the FamilySearch Tree app is now available in the Apple App store. In my testing, it fixes the problem with the place picker. Please update your app to this version. We'd love to hear if it fixes the problem for you as well.

Thank you for your patience, and the time you took to report this issue.
