Tree search preferences are saved independently for each browser type
The Family Tree search preferences can be set via the PREFERENCES button on the search form. The choices made there are saved independently, depending on which browser you are using (e.g. Chrome, Firefox, Edge for Windows). This means that you have to set your preferences for each browser type.
It may be that the settings are also dependent on the specific device you are using. I haven't had an opportunity to check whether this is the case, but I and other users reported somewhat similar behaviour relating to the visibility of items on the To Do list some time ago.
There are some other preference-type settings that you can make in unrelated areas of the FamilySearch website which are saved and then used by all browser types. You only have to set these once, and they apply to all subsequent activity in any browser. I'm thinking of the expanded/collapsed state of the various widgets on the home page (aka Research Portal), and the two Detail View and Show All Family Members switches on the profile screen.
Can the search preferences behaviour be changed so that changes made using one browser type are used for subsequent searches from any browser type?

@shecorwe I can now confirm that the system does store separate sets of search preferences based on the device being used as well as the browser type. I have tried this on my Windows desktop, my Android phone and an affiliate library's Windows desktop, checking multiple browsers in each case.
