I see a naturalization record for Giovanni Giannotti, b 24 June 1888, in Catinzaro, with an arrival date of 7 September 1906, on board the Lombardia.

Giovanni Giannotti was born in the Melissa - while once part of Catanzaro Province when he was born - it is now part of the Province of Crotone.

I discovered this while reading both his WW1 Draft Registration Card and his passenger arrival manifest - where his surname was spelled Giannotta

He was born 24 Jun 1888 and his parents were Rosario, age 42 and Teresa Ignutta (?)

It will take a little more digging to find the birth of his wife Genoeffa (or Genoffa or Genoveffa) in 1893 as I am not sure she was also from Melissa. I will post back here if I do.

Thank you for all the information, which is for the correct person, my grandfather, Giovanni (John) Giannotti. I am very appreciative for your research. His mother was named Teresa Ignoti (meaning parents unknown). She was a foundling and grew up in a convent. I have very little information about her other than she was a midwife and a maestra of embroidery. Her husband, Rosario Giannotti, died by drowning. I have even less information about him. They had 4 children and Giovanni Giannotti was probably the youngest. The oldest son was Vincenzo Giannotti, b. around 1878 and possible death in 1931. Vincenzo came to the US on the ship SS Manuel Calvo on 10/14/1903. Their family home was probably in Catanzaro or Strongoli, Calabria, Italy.

Giovanni Giannotti's wife was Assunta (aka Genoveffa) Criscuoli (b. 10/10/1896) and they married in 1911. Their marriage took place in her hometown of Melitza (Calabrian: Mèlissë) or Torre Melitza (Torre Melissa aka Melitza), in Calabria. Right after their marriage they immigrated to the U.S. arriving on June 20, 1911.

When I downloaded the birth certificate, draft registration and ship manifest, they were very hard to read. Is there a way to get a clearer picture? I used the enlarge button but the images were still hard to read and print. Thank you.

Click on "View Original Document"

Then the small arrow at the top of the resulting display.

You can download as a PDF or a JPG. The JPG is quite large and very legible.
