Couple relationship

What do you do when none of the list of events fits a couple relationship. I don't like leaving it blank, to me that means research needs to be done in that area. My parents only had a few encounters, as my father was married to someone else. My mother got pregnant and went to live with the couple she gave me to for adoption. She moved away the next day. I filled out a form to suggest a new category, but not sure what it would be called. There must be others in a similar situation, though.

@Patricia O'Neal_1 do you consider that they were actually a couple at all? Sounds like perhaps not. If not, you don't have to create a Couple Relationship in FT - this doesn't stop you creating a Child/Parents Relationship involving both parents.

I have an adopted relative in my family whose parents did not marry. I have created 3 sets of parents for this relative because her family relationships almost demand it. I have her adoptive mother and father and her adoptive siblings. I have her biological father and his wife, who must be established as "step mother" because everything else is nonsensical. Under that couple are my relatives paternal half siblings. The 3rd couple is her biological mother and her husband, who again is "step father". Under that couple are my relative's maternal half siblings. She is attached to all 3 couples with her relationships stated visible, which is great.

It is crazy but it works. If you do not have a relationship with your half siblings, you may not want to go to all that trouble, but my relative has spent time visiting with her biological families. I too, have spent time with some of them on the phone getting information about the family history. It has been a wonderful collaboration, actually, so it is important to me to separate out the maternal side of her family from the paternal.

I hope this helps you think out a solution for your situation.

@Patricia O'Neal_1 My grandparents married and had my mother. She is their biological child. My grandfather died, my grandmother remarried and that husband raised my mother and was also the grandfather we knew. if you look at my grandmother's record, my mother is there as a biological child of her parents, and there again as an adoptive daughter of the second marriage. If you use the edit button, you can add all of the identification needed. it shows clearly that my grandmother is the biological parent, and her second husband is the adoptive parent. I think there should be a way in family search to clearly identify each of your parents. Keep in mind that because you are still living, no one will see these notes except for you, but the identification will be there! I hope you find a way to identify every one and please come back if you need more suggestions.

My grandfather’s parents are known (following DNA tests and a lot of research). However they were not married and the nature of their relationship is unknown. I created a couple relationship. I left Events, Facts and Sources blank. Under Notes I stated that they were not married and that the nature of their relationship is unknown. Perhaps you could do something similar to explain your particular circumstances.
