Confused and Hesitant to Merge. Need a second set of eyes on this.
Hello community,
I need a quick second look at a suspected identity scramble before I detach relationships and execute a merge. I want to ensure my logic aligns with FamilySearch best practices.
The Two Profiles:
- Sourced Profile: Annette Nettie Burlingame (LW2B-89Y)
- Sparse Profile (Suspected Ghost): Nettie Blanch King (M5QJ-4KW)
The Conflict:
The birth dates match within a year, but they have different parents attached.
- Annette Burlingame (LW2B-89Y) is with her biological Burlingame parents.
- Nettie King (M5QJ-4KW) is attached to Walter Watt King (KHC9-3R3) and Elizabeth Henrietta Trott ($K4L9-1K1).
The Census Audit Evidence:
- Burlingame Household (1870 Census): Explicitly lists Annette as a child.
- Walter Watt King Household (1870 Census): No child named Annette, Nettie, or Blanch appears.
My Hypothesis:
Annette Nettie Burlingame (LW2B-89Y) married William E. King on 31 December 1895. A previous researcher appears to have mistaken her married surname for a maiden name, generated the duplicate profile (M5QJ-4KW), and erroneously anchored her to the Walter Watt King branch.
Request:
- Can anyone verify if there is any primary evidence showing Walter Watt King actually had a biological daughter named Nettie Blanch King born circa 1870 or other sources?
- Is my plan to detach the King parents, clean the post-1895 sources, and merge the empty ID (M5QJ-4KW) into LW2B-89Y the correct way to resolve this?
- Should I merge them?

OK, worked over the King/Burlingame couple. Definitely different. Will now remove the 1910 Wa D.C. note from Nettie Blanch.
While Nettie B (Burlingame) King would be a valid name later in life; the Nettie Blanch King is just different enough that I would leave it alone. Let her stay w/ the family that she's with now - even with no sources at all; and trust that someone prior to 2012 had her sourced up or otherwise had reason to have Nettie Blanch created and part of the King family of Calvert County, MD. That family tree was uploaded and input into FamilySearch when this FS iteration came online that year. Those sources will re-appear in time.
Annette Nettie Burlingame would appear to have grown up around Annapolis MD. Her Obit is the one source that ties her back from her married name & spouse to the Burlingame siblings and proves out her parents and siblings.

Working the people. I concur with your observation. I don't like Nettie Blanch King as daughter of King/Trott. Only other mention of her in there is in the user created bio of mom Trott on findagrave.
Did go up to parents to clean up and source up them. Their vitals now more clearly reflect the sources attached (that do all look good and fit). Then back down to sourced son: Milton S. found more details for him, including second wife, and her extended family…
- I did remove the 1910 Washington DC census that you have tied to her - from her parents that are not mentioned in that record and should not be linked to that record.
