Possible incorrect family connection involving a relative
Hi everyone,
I need help figuring out a possible incorrect merge or incorrect family connection involving my possible relative Francisca Sarmiento.
I am researching my maternal grandfather’s maternal line. I have found birth records for two sisters in my family:
- Hipolita, born in 1890
- Antonia, born in 1901
In both birth records, their mother is listed as Francisca Sarmiento.
However, in other family trees, a woman named Francisca Sarmiento González has been attached as their mother. This is where I am unsure, because the Francisca Sarmiento González attached in those trees appears to have a death record showing that she died in 1893 at age 35.
If that death record belongs to the same woman, she could not be the mother of Antonia, who was born in 1901. Also, Antonia’s birth record says that her mother Francisca was 35 years old when Antonia was born, which would place her birth around 1866, not 1858.
There is also a child named Eliseo Sarmiento attached to this same Francisca in some trees, supposedly born in 1883, but I have not found a birth record or other supporting source for him.
So my question is:
How should I evaluate whether these are the same person or different women with similar names?
Should I keep Francisca Sarmiento González separate unless I find a source directly connecting her to her daughters?
I’m new at this and I feel stuck, I tried to find other records of Fransisca Sarmiento from the same area but it is impossible.
I’m super appreciative for all the help I can get.

Here are the records I have found so far:- Hipolita’s birth record

- Possible death record for Fransisca Sarmiento Gonzalez
- And the Fransisca Sarmiento I actually think is the correct one
This is my tree, not sure you can access it or if you need to (..again.. I'm new at this)
The reason I’m questioning the connection is that the Francisca Sarmiento González attached in some trees appears to have died in 1893, while Antonia was born in 1901. And I can't find anything else on Fransisca Sarmiento (not Gonzalez) only the birth certificate of the girls.

The 4th link you provided goes to her profile page, not to the 2nd death record you think is the correct one.
Do you have a link to that death record instead of the 1893 one?

Hi @Carina Rodriguez Ortiz, In my opinion Francisca Sarmiento González who died in 1893 in Cachapoal is a different person to your Francisca Sarmiento, who, according to known records, resided in Combarbalá. Those two places are over 500kms apart. I would go ahead and detach that death record.
A child named Eliceo was baptised on the the 29th September 1883 in Combarbalá, Coquimbo, Chile. His mother was Francisca Sarmiento. His actual birth was 1880.
There is another baptism for a child named Rosa Maria with the event date 1888, though from the transcript it's not clear if that is birth or baptism.
There is also a baptism record for Hipólita del Carmen Sarmiento on the 10 October 1891.
A Francisca Sarmiento also appears on four other baptism records including for Dominga, daughter of Cristina Sarmiento in 1874, and for Veltoldino Anastacio son of Eustaquia Sarmiento in 1871 (as Francisca Sarmiente). Other names that crop up repeatedly across the baptism records are multiple Aguileras, Plácido Ramírez (3x), and Pedro Riquelmes (2x).
This should link you to the search results. Unfortunately, the original images aren't available remotely and must be viewed at a FamilySearch center or affiliate library, so more detailed information isn't readily available on the relationships of those in the records.

What I meant to say was:
If you remove the life event place qualifier from that search, another baptism is added to the results for a Manuel Morales in 1881 which lists Francisca Sanmiento [sic], Eustaquia Sarmiento and a Valenciano Sarmiento in the transcript.
There is also a marriage record for a Teresa Sarmiento (aged 18) in 1897 whose mother is listed as Francisca Sarmiento, who may be another child.
There seems to be a bit of a gap between birth, registration and baptisms of the children, so if you're having trouble locating records you may like to try widening your date parameters.
If you can get to a FamilySearch center or affiliate library to view the original records I would suggest investigating whether the originals shed more light on the relationships of these people, as I suspect they're extended family. If you're having trouble locating more information on Francisca Sarmiento directly you may have more luck undertaking lateral research of these other individuals which may lead to more information on Francisca.
