Error in describing "City" in 1940 Census NY Delaware Middletown
This has been misinterpreted to mean that the people in ED 13-40 all lived in Arena.
This is not at all the case - it includes the hamlet of Halcottsville and the farms surrounding it that were Halcottsville post office
for instance my great uncle who lived on/off of Bragg Hollow Rd, Halcottsville post office
This error affects many people as the location is 'pulled in'.
A similar error has occurred in 1925 census for NY Delaware Middletown
Record information is pulled in from Ancestry - Ancestry's index does not show Margaretville. My great grandmother and 2 sons (Esther Rowe) lived on Bragg Hollow rd - THAT is what the record shows. Nothing about Margaretville, which is the largest hamlet in Middletown. (My dad was born in Margaretville. From the cradle I knew that was NOT where Grandma was from…)
There is also an error in how death records are assigned to counties. There is NO Middletown in either Queens or Saratoga county. I saw both of those today.
I guess the question is whether this can all be cleaned up at a higher level than individual entries.

The errors of Queens or Saratoga counties listed for Middletown are more likely from the place standardization error, which has been widely discussed.URLS/links would be useful.
